Sparky 8.4 "Seven Sisters" Released: Debian 13 Distro Brings Back 32-bit Linux Support
Sparky 8.4 "Seven Sisters" is out today with i686-pae images back, newer kernels and a full refresh of desktop editions.
SparkyLinux has released 8.4, the fourth quarterly update to its Seven Sisters stable line. It's built on Debian 13 Trixie and it brings back 32-bit Live and install images after dropping them about a year ago. The update landed on August 10, 2026 from lead developer pavroo.
Sparky has been around roughly 14 years as a ready-to-use distro for aging hardware. It's still entirely donation funded and volunteer run. The project positions itself between heavier all-in-one distros like Mint and MX Linux and bare-bones rolling releases like Arch or AntiX. One community member summed it up as "it is not too heavy and not too minimalistic."
32-bit is back, for better or worse
The headline here is 32-bit support. Sparky removed i686-pae Live/Install ISOs when Debian dropped them about a year ago. The team reversed that call after confirming "there are still a significant number of people in the world who own 'really old,' still functional computers with 32-bit processors."
Sparky 8.4 ships two 32-bit offerings. MinimalGUI is an ultra-light Openbox desktop edition. MinimalCLI is a text-mode edition for advanced self-configuration. Both are started and installed via command line. The Calamares graphical installer is not included for 32-bit.
That's a notable contrarian move. While the broader Debian community moves away from legacy hardware, Sparky is one of the few major distributions still actively serving 32-bit machines alongside modern 64-bit and ARM builds.
Keep in mind that 32-bit images are not a full return to the old days. You get Openbox and CLI only, and you'll need to run sudo sparky-installer after booting. The live credentials for PC images are live:live, and for ARM it's pi:sparky. All images support BIOS and UEFI with Secure Boot.
What's inside 8.4
All packages were refreshed from stable Debian and Sparky repos as of August 9, 2026. Existing Sparky 8 installs can upgrade in place with sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade. A full reinstall is not necessary.
On PC 64-bit the default kernel is 6.12.101-LTS. The Sparky repo also offers 7.1.8, 6.18.43-LTS and 6.12.102-LTS. ARM64 Raspberry Pi ships with 6.18.39-rpi. The 32-bit edition uses 6.12.102-LTS.
Desktops are current. KDE Plasma is 6.3.6, Xfce is 4.20, LXQt is 2.1.0, MATE is 1.26.0 and Openbox is 3.6.1 for MinimalGUI. Core apps include LibreOffice 25.2.3 with 26.2.4.2 available via Debian backports, Firefox ESR 140.13.0esr and Thunderbird 140.13.0esr. For amd64 and arm64 the Sparky repo also provides firefox-latest 153.0.3.
Architecture support is now amd64 with Xfce, LXQt, MATE, KDE Plasma, MinimalGUI and MinimalCLI. ARM64 gets Openbox and CLI. i686-pae gets MinimalGUI and MinimalCLI.
Sparky also keeps three special editions. GameOver is gaming focused. Multimedia targets audio/video and web dev. Rescue is a system rescue toolbox using Openbox.
The project runs two tracks. Stable Seven Sisters is quarterly and recommended for most users. Rolling testing is for advanced users who want newer software at the cost of stability.
Head here to grab your preferred architecture, and UEFI installation is the recommended path.
