Linux Mint just dropped a fresh set of Hardware Enablement ISOs for Linux Mint 22.3 "Zena," and the headline spec is a jump to Linux kernel 7.0. If you've been chasing newer hardware support, these alternative install images now ship with that kernel ready to go. Regular Mint 22.3 ISOs still carry kernel 6.14, so the HWE tier is explicitly meant for people whose machines don't behave with the standard image. You can grab kernel 7.0 for the full feature set or take a more incremental step up to kernel 6.17. The project's official guidance is straightforward: only use an HWE ISO if the regular one does not work on your computer. Proprietary drivers like NVIDIA and Broadcom have a messy history with rolling kernel upgrades, though the team is being upfront about that.

Keep in mind that HWE ISOs aren't a new concept. They've been a quiet staple of the distribution for years, but pushing the kernel two full years forward is a bigger jump than usual. It brings two years of driver improvements, scheduling tweaks, and filesystem optimizations straight to your install media. Not cheap to wait around for, either, considering how fast silicon moves.

New kernel management lands in System Administration

The kernel management overhaul is arguably the bigger story here, and it's arriving in the System Administration tool ahead of the next stable release. The old approach of juggling individual kernel versions through the Update Manager is gone. In its place is a series-based model. You pick which kernel series you want to track, set how many older versions to keep, and let the Update Manager handle the rest.

Older kernels outside your retention limit get purged automatically on a weekly cron schedule. Need space right now? You can force a cleanup manually. There is also a history log showing exactly what got removed and when. That audit trail matters when something breaks after an update. Individual kernels can be locked down to prevent auto-deletion, and if you are running a custom or OEM build, the tool will flag it and ask whether to track it going forward.

Clem L'Allemand confirmed the new system works across both Linux Mint 22.3 and LMDE 7, including kernels pulled from Debian backports. If you are running a niche build like a Real-Time kernel, the warning is clear: you are on your own for keeping it patched. And that is not even the full story. The team also built in protection for untracked series, removing their kernels on the next cleanup unless you manually lock them down.

Environment variables and input method parity

Alongside the kernel manager, the System Administration tool now includes a dedicated environment variables page. Variables set here apply across all sessions, graphical and console. You can configure JAVA_HOME, proxy settings, or custom paths without manually editing /etc/environment or chasing down shell profiles. Quite an upgrade from the dotfile days.

Input method support got a major lift too. Cinnamon now backs Fcitx5 with full parity between Wayland and X11. Switch it on in Input Methods settings and the desktop stops launching ibus-daemon, delegating everything to Fcitix instead. Complex input systems like CJK and Indic layouts should run noticeably cleaner. There is also a new keyboard layout viewer replacing the long-discontinued gnome-kbd, plus a tweak to how panels behave over fullscreen windows. Clicking around the panel while a game or video is running no longer feels like fighting the window manager.
