Mabox Linux 26.07 drops a tint2 tray fix and FSearch 0.3
The rolling-release Openbox distro tackles Steam-induced panel freezes and brings real-time filesystem monitoring to its default search tool.
Mabox Linux 26.07 shipped this afternoon, bringing a downstream patch to its tint2 panel and upgrading the default file-search utility to version 0.3. If you run Steam or Lutris on a lightweight X11 setup, this drop actually solves the tray-freeze headache that has nagged the project for years.
Mabox has kept a monthly release rhythm since January 2026, riding along Manjaro Stable's back while layering its own Openbox-centric polish on top. The July build skips the May and June numbering entirely. That just means the project pushed rolling updates through the spring and consolidated them into a single July ISO. Either way, the foundation stays firmly rooted in a rolling Manjaro stable branch with LTS kernels by default.
What actually changed
The headline fix targets the X Embed Status Icon Protocol. When apps like Steam, Lutris, LocalSend, or Remote Desktop Manager register their tray icons, tint2 would lock up. The entire panel goes unresponsive. The Mabox team applied a downstream patch that sidesteps the protocol bug without forcing users to swap panels or wait for upstream to move. Upstream tint2 is a small community project, and complex X11 tray interactions rarely make the priority list.
FSearch jumped from the 0.2.x branch to 0.3. It now watches the filesystem with inotify, so results update without you hitting a manual rescan button. Per-folder indexing schedules, better exclude rules with regex support, absolute wall-clock rescan timing, and a welcome dialog for existing users round out the release. The ISO bundles the 0.3.1 patch release, which fixes UI blocking on slow storage and a config-save quirk.
Flameshot stays locked at 13.3 because, as the team put it, "the newest release refuses to cooperate." Not wrong. The project also ships a built-in screenshot and desktop-recording tool accessible via Super + PrtScr.
What else is in the box
Under the hood, this ISO inherits the Manjaro stable update from July 23. The broader roll included Mesa drivers, VirtualBox, Gambas3, and a new COSMIC 1.2 session option. System76's Rust-based Wayland desktop is now available as an alternative workspace in an Openbox-focused distro. It's a pragmatic move that keeps Mabox relevant as the Wayland transition continues to fragment the desktop space.
You can grab two ISOs. The roughly 3,500 MB image uses Linux 6.18 LTS, while the slightly smaller roughly 3,360 MB build sticks with 6.6 LTS. Both boot with an option to switch between open-source and proprietary drivers. Downloads live on SourceForge and the official repo.
The project continues to be built by a small team in Poland, led by maintainer napcok. It keeps its funding model modest, leaning mostly on Ko-fi donations and a standing request to support Manjaro directly. The forum and IRC remain the primary support channels, and the blog still runs practical how-tos alongside development notes.
It is not a revolutionary build. The project is not chasing GNOME extensions or pushing Wayland as a default session. The tint2 patch and FSearch upgrade tackle two of the most visible pain points for efficiency-focused desktop users. If you are running a tiling or Openbox setup and value a desktop that stays out of your way, 26.07 is the update to grab before the monthly rolling cycle moves on.
