KDE released Plasma 6.7.6 today, as the sixth maintenance update in the 6.7 feature line. The update packs roughly two months of fixes across 20+ modules, with a heavy emphasis on KWin crash fixes, power management, and remote desktop compatibility. It deliberately arrives in the final leg of the 6.7 series, which KDE kept alive to ease users into the Wayland-only Plasma 6.8 released on 14 October. The 6.7 line wraps up with 6.7.7 on 19 January 2027, marking the end of X11 window manager support.

KDE Plasma 6.7.6 ships as the November bugfix release that keeps X11 alive

KDE pushed out Plasma 6.7.6 today, and it's exactly what you'd expect from a maintenance release. No new features. Just the usual pile of fixes. What makes this one worth a glance is the timing. It lands in the final stretch of a desktop line that KDE is deliberately keeping on life support.

The 6.7.6 update bundles roughly two months of fixes contributed by developers across KDE's worldwide community. The official announcement is understated in the best way. "The bugfixes are typically small but important," KDE wrote. Those small-but-important fixes span more than 20 modules and touch nearly every corner of the desktop.

A lot of fixing, in a lot of places

KWin, the window manager, eats the biggest slice of this pie, and that makes sense. It sits at the center of everything Plasma does, and it's where crashes tend to pile up. KDE squashed crash regressions in screencasting and screenshot capture, fixed window-focus logic that was closing the task switcher too early, and corrected several display-handling quirks. Outputs are now hashed by name and EDID identifier rather than the raw EDID, which should mean more stable multi-monitor setups.

There's also the stuff you'll never see but will feel when it works. Key-repeat behavior is fixed. The on-screen keyboard now hides itself the moment you're done. Tablet mode switching is hardened so pointer devices stop overriding a genuine tablet-mode toggle. Not bad for a release nobody came here for.

Power management got its share too. Screens no longer stay dimmed after you lose brightness control, a zero-value keyboard-backlight maximum is now treated as "unsupported," and low-battery alerts stop firing on invalid percentages. If your laptop's brightness slider has been spitting errors, this might be the fix.

Remote desktop and screen sharing didn't escape the maintenance hammer. KDE's RDP backend now plays nicely with FreeRDP 3.32, while the desktop portal picked up a fallback for environments missing std::move_only_function. Niche, sure, but a real compatibility win when you hit it.

The part most bugfix briefings skip

Plasma 6.7 was meant to be a normal six-month feature line. It shipped on 16 June 2026 with the good stuff: per-screen virtual desktops, a mic volume test, a revived Oxygen theme for KDE's 30th anniversary, and HDR color profiles working alongside ICC. Then, on 14 October, KDE dropped Plasma 6.8 as a Wayland-only desktop and officially retired the native X11 session.

That left a lot of X11-dependent users and distributions without an obvious landing spot. KDE's answer was to extend 6.7 deliberately, keeping it alive with bugfix releases so people could migrate at their own pace. 6.7.6 is one of those last acts.

The whole 6.7 line runs through early 2027, ending with 6.7.7 scheduled for 19 January 2027. That one marks the end of support for the X11 window manager, and it's the final scheduled 6.7 drop. Keep in mind that the 6.6 LTS track still gets X11 bugfixes as well, so you're not stranded if you're sitting on the older line.

It's a slightly odd thing to be grateful for. A maintenance release crammed with quiet reliability tweaks isn't exciting, but the fact that KDE bothered to keep X11 stable for its final months rather than cutting it off cold says something about how it wants to treat people mid-migration. The lack of new features is kind of the point.

Grabbing it

As always, availability hinges on your distro's packaging schedule, and KDE notes packages "might not be available on all distributions at the time of this announcement." You can get it through distribution repos once built, via live USB or Docker images, on KDE neon, or by building from source. If you're on the 6.7 X11 track, update as soon as your distro catches up.
