Bottles 67.1 Drops to Fix UMU Runtime Regressions and Restore cpak Navigation
Bottles 67.1 is live, and it's a targeted patch designed to fix a regression that broke game launches for users relying on UMU runtime with dedicated sandbox mode. Lead developer Mirko Brombin pushed the update late Tuesday, September 1, consolidating fixes for the runtime, cpak navigation, and a stuck UI toggle.
Another day, another Bottles update. If you're running Linux and trying to game through Bottles, this one matters. Bottles 66.10 introduced dedicated sandbox support for UMU prefixes, but it came with a side effect. The sandbox isolated the UMU runtime directory so aggressively that the umu-run binary couldn't find its own toolmanifest.vdf file. Games just refused to start.
The Sandbox and the Missing Manifest
The issue caught the team off guard. Users reported that enabling the sandbox in a UMU prefix rendered every game unlaunchable. The fix was simple once tracked down. The runtime now correctly locates its manifest file even when the sandbox is active. The patch also restores cpak package navigation, which had become unreliable in the Flatpak build. On top of that, the update adds a network sandbox toggle for UMU prefixes. You can now restrict internet access for specific containers, which is a nice security boost for isolated gaming environments.
It's a rapid response. The bug was reported on August 31 and resolved by Tuesday night. If you're keeping score, that's less than two days from report to release. The project moves fast, especially considering Brombin is handling almost all the heavy lifting on his own. The pace is aggressive, though the lack of a detailed changelog beyond the PR title leaves you guessing at the full scope of the underlying changes.
UI Polish and the Road Ahead
The release also addresses a GTK-related quirk. The "Command Arguments" checkbox in launch options would get permanently greyed out after disabling it once. You could work around it by removing and re-adding the shortcut, but the patch makes that unnecessary. The cpak containerized packaging format continues to mature alongside the traditional Flatpak distribution. Bottles is clearly betting on self-contained containers for future releases.
