Early Steam Machine owners recently reported a flashing red light bar glitch that sparked fears of a major hardware failure. Valve clarified that the malfunction stems from an interrupted BIOS update and a subsequent memory training error. The official fix requires users to unplug the console, press the power button several times to drain residual charge, and then hold the button for six seconds before pressing it briefly to trigger a CMOS reset. A successful reset should turn the light bar blue while the system takes a few extra seconds to wake up, and Valve plans to track community reports to monitor how widespread the issue really is.
Valve’s Steam Machine Tackles “Red Line of Death” Issue
Valve’s brand-new console is already accumulating early ownership headaches. A mysterious light bar glitch appears to respond to a straightforward CMOS reset, and it is likely not the hardware failure some fans feared.
The issues first surfaced on Reddit and X this week, catching Valve right as early adopters are settling into their new systems. The problem seems purely software related to a memory training hiccup that should clear up with a full power cycle.
Taming the Light Bar Glitch
If your Steam Machine started behaving like a Cylon from the new Battlestar Galactica series, Valve has a fix ready. The company posted a straightforward recovery procedure to its official forums. Unplug the console, press the power button a few times to drain residual energy from the power supply, and then reconnect it.
Hold the power button for roughly six seconds until the LED flashes. Let it cycle through its color codes until it turns green, then short press to trigger a full CMOS reset. Valve told us the glitch likely stems from an incomplete BIOS update and a memory training hiccup. The front panel code also ships flipped horizontally by accident, which probably confuses the initial power sequence.
"Since this happened right after (or during) a BIOS update, it's very likely that the update didn't fully complete, and is a memory training issue," Valve wrote. "The procedure above should force a fresh training."
On the next boot, the RGB bar should light up blue. Keep in mind that the console will take a few extra seconds to wake up while the memory retrains itself.
