Mandriva 1273 Published by

Using a rolling release strategy, OpenMandriva ROME 24.07 incorporates all features from the Release Candidate and updates packages to the newest version. Among its features are a ROME Plasma6 Wayland ISO, KDE Plasma 6 as the default desktop, LXQt and GNOME spins, and more. With the release of proton-experimental and prototon as OpenMandriva packages, Proton is no longer limited to Steam.

To make setting up your system and installing software a breeze, OpenMandriva Lx's Startup and Configuration utility compiles modules from previous applications. Plasma Desktop 6.1.3, KDE Applications 24.05.2, KDE Frameworks 6.4, Qt 6.7.2, kernel 6.10, LibraOffice Suite 24.2.5, Chromium Browser 126.0.6478.182, Firefox 128.0, Falkon 24.05.2 are some of the modern software packages that have been upgraded.

OpenMandriva ROME 24.07 Released

Here is ROME 24.07, the rolling release model up-to-date install images. It basically carries all the features already included in the Release Candidate with the packages updated to the latest… Let’s make a summary of the main peculiarities.

End-user interest:

- Switch to the KDE Plasma 6 desktop by default

- Spins featuring LXQt (2.0.0 Qt6) and GNOME (46.3)

- Also provided is a ROME Plasma6 Wayland ISO, however we believe Wayland still not to be mature enough to replace X11 by default for most users.
Please note the Wayland ISO in VirtualBox almost always will boot to a black screen and will not work. It works fine on most hardware and in QEmu with KVM.

- In addition to the normal wine Windows emulator, proton and proton-experimental - variants of wine that are typically used to run Windows games inside Steam - are now available as OpenMandriva packages. For the first time, this makes Proton available outside of Steam, without the need to install any non-free code

- OM-Welcome, the new Startup and Configuration tool for OpenMandriva Lx is now a merge of modules from the historical brand-name applications oma-welcome and om-control-center features.
It aims to be a convenient centralized all-in-one starting point both to configure the system and to install software

- Software upgraded to the most recent version, as default in the ISO install media or available in repositories, such as:
Desktop Environments: Plasma Desktop 6.1.3, KDE Applications 24.05.2, KDE Frameworks 6.4, Qt 6.7.2
Kernel: 6.10, built with clang
LibreOffice Suite 24.2.5 with Qt 6 and Plasma 6 integration, Chromium Browser 126.0.6478.182 patched with Google spyware disabled and JPEG-XL support re-enabled, Firefox 128.0 patched with spyware disabled, Falkon 24.05.2

- Security and privacy first: promptly addressed all the recent security vulnerabilities as soon as relevant patches have been available, and browsers come with internal spyware disabled (ungoogled chromium, firefox 128 data collection disabled)

- Added support for AMD ROCm technology for supported graphics chips, and the AI graphics generation plugin for Krita

Developers and packaging specific interest:

- New rpm’s Declarative Build feature which provides implementations for most common build systems, including cmake, meson, autotools and python (setuptools/pip). Build/install instructions for many packages can now be reduced to something as simple as BuildSystem: cmake - even when the package calls for something more complicated like including 32-bit compat libraries.

- Development Tools: LLVM/Clang 18.1.8, GCC 14.1.0, Glibc 2.39, Systemd 255.7, Mesa 24.1.4

Builds for various aarch64 devices will be coming as soon as possible.
Delevopers are working on the RISC-V port, which we hope to debut with the next release.
