For those unfamiliar, Exim is an open-source MTA developed at the University of Cambridge for Unix-based systems connected to the Internet. Its flexible routing capabilities and robust facilities for checking incoming mail make it a popular choice among system administrators.

The latest version includes a range of enhancements designed to improve performance, security, and user experience. Some of the key features and changes include support for sieve inbox options in redirect routers, allowing for more granular control over mail routing.

A new "connection_id" variable provides additional information about SMTP connections, enabling more detailed logging and analysis. Expanded event logging for SMTP failures due to protocol or syntax errors helps system administrators identify and address issues more effectively.

Exim 4.99 also includes improvements to filter support, allowing users to omit Exim and Sieve filters at build time if desired. This can help streamline the build process and reduce memory usage.

In addition, the latest version of Exim introduces JSON and LDAP lookup support, as well as PAM, RADIUS, perl, SPF, DKIM, DMARC, and ARC support for all router and authenticator drivers except smtp. These enhancements enable more flexible and secure mail routing configurations.

Other notable features in Exim 4.99 include:

  • The ability to specify no proxying using the socks_proxy transport.
  • Support for ATRN (Automated Ticket Reply Notification) both as a provider and customer.
  • IPv6 address support for MySQL and PgSQL lookups, enabling more flexible database connections.
  • Expanded options for hosts_randomize are available in manual route routers and SMTP transports.
