[M 9.2.] Toshiba Laptop Screen error : turning screen off/on

I'm not sure this qualifies as general Linux, if not, feel free to tell me so. Mandrake 9. 2/KDE 3. 1 on Toshiba Laptop 490XCDT I have a problem with my screen : when I turn of my screen and then turn it back on, i get a f$cked up screen.

I haven't found any information on this. If someone does know info on this, plz pass it on.

You know, my wife's Toshiba Satellite with Morphix does the same sort of thing for a few seconds after bootup and before bringing up the DE. It never last any time though. Does yours stay like that?

Yes, I've tried waiting (well 5 minutes anyway, that seemed long enough).
 
The only time I get this screen is when I have turned it back on.
"Lock screen" doesn't seem to have this problem.
 
I basically turn my screen off quite a lot, because I want to avoid using screensavers.... I hate those things
 
Have you heard of others with this problem? I might have to search "google" a little deeper ....

Some extra information.
 
I tested it, by letting the screen go blank by itself. So that it flicks back on, when I push the mouse.
Didn't give the funny screen then.
 
So is it a Hardware problem maybe ?
