Zed Industries released version 1.26.2 today, a weekly patch that bundles Pyrefly, Microsoft's Python language server, as an opt-in built-in option. The release also lets you expand nested variable values directly in debugger hovers and adds DWARF support for debugging WebAssembly sources. On top of the headline features, it ships a long tail of fixes for agent integrations, SSH reconnections, macOS Display P3 color, and cross-platform file handling. Coming just weeks into Zed's steady 1.26 line, the patch nudges the Rust-native editor closer to IDE-grade tooling without sacrificing its speed-focused pitch.

Zed 1.26.2 ships Pyrefly, debugger hover expansion, and WebAssembly debugging

This weekly patch quietly adds a built-in Python language server and pushes real debugging forward.

Zed released version 1.26.2 today, a patch that looks unremarkable at first glance but quietly tackles two of its most repeated asks from developers: better Python tooling and an actual debugging experience. The headline change bundles Pyrefly, Microsoft's newer Python language server, as an optional built-in option. On the debugger side, you can now expand nested variable values directly in hover popups, and the JavaScript debugger gains DWARF support for WebAssembly sources.

It's not the kind of release that lights a fire. But the steady accumulation of moves like this is what determines whether Zed ever truly earns its "AI-native editor" tagline.

Keep in mind that Zed runs a blistering weekly cadence across its stable and preview channels, so 1.26.2 is just one more block on the 1.26 line. It shipped at 15:16 UTC, published by Zed's automated release bot off commit c4273271. If you watch the main branch, there are already 122 commits on top of it. That alone tells you how fast the team moves.

Python tooling and real debugging

Pyrefly is Microsoft's high-performance Python backend, built to eventually replace Pyright inside Pylance. It's also the default language server in Positron now. Zed bundling it as an opt-in option, toggleable through the language_servers setting, is the real story here. The change came from contributor grievejia in PR #44262.

The opt-in framing is doing real work. Zed isn't ripping out Pyright by force; it gives existing Python users a faster path without breaking their configured servers. For what it's worth, that restraint is exactly the call that keeps a large codebase from bristling on update day.

The debugger changes cut deeper. Expanding nested variable values inside hover popups removes the need to open a separate panel just to inspect a dictionary one level down. It's keyboard accessible too, which is a small detail that matters more than expected when you're deep in a stack trace. That work, by contributor Tortes, landed in PR #53198.

WebAssembly debugging is more niche. The JavaScript debugger now supports DWARF debug info for WASM sources, giving you real symbols and line numbers. It's a meaningful step for anyone doing serious WASM work, though most Zed users likely never touch it. Still, it signals the team treats debugging as a feature rather than a bolt-on.

The release notes put it plainly: "This week's release includes Pyrefly as an optional built-in Python language server, the ability to expand and inspect nested variable values directly in debugger hovers, and DWARF debugging for WebAssembly sources in the JavaScript debugger."

The long tail of agent and platform fixes

If you've ever wrestled AI agents inside an editor, you know most of the work is just keeping external connections from silently breaking. This release is full of those fixes. The Agent Client Protocol now applies its new config defaults only to fresh conversations, so updating your agent settings won't silently rewrite an existing session. Contributor JacobNWolf also improved fuzzy search within the agent pickers, deliberately running it off the UI thread to dodge stutters, the kind of GPU-rendering detail that only someone following Zed's priorities would catch but which is exactly why the editor feels snappier than its Electron competitors even with agents churning in the background.

The bug list reads like a checklist of everything that goes wrong when you plug third-party agents into a custom editor. There's OpenCode reasoning stream replay, Google "thinking" toggles, Google API keys misclassified as bad requests instead of auth failures, and Mistral Large 4 responses failing through OpenAI-compatible endpoints.

Non-agent platform polish rounds it out. There's a new use_display_p3 setting for the wider-gamut Display P3 color space on macOS, helpful for design-sensitive or photo-video work on Apple displays. SSH reconnections got smoother by starting the resync timeout only after the handshake completes. A fix also finally resolves file links with line numbers that failed to open WSL files from Windows.

Zed has come a long way since 2023. Nathan Sobo, who originally created Atom after Microsoft killed it in 2022, launched the project alongside co-founders Christian Williams and JP Sevinsky as a fast, modern successor to Atom's spirit. Zed raised $32 million led by Sequoia in August 2025, and shipped version 1.0 in April 2026 with codebase work exceeding a million lines of code.

It hasn't been frictionless. In March 2026, Kristoffer Grönlund forked the project as "Gram," citing his dislike of Zed's AI features and its terms of use. Zed updated its own terms the same day Gram launched. A small episode. But telling.

Zed keeps doubling down on speed and native agentic editing as its wedge against VS Code, Cursor, and Windsurf. Add intelligence without paying for it in responsiveness. That's the pitch, and its GPU-accelerated GPUI architecture is what makes it plausible.

Whether 1.26.2 lands in your workflow depends on how much you value Python tooling and debugging depth. Python developers who've held out for a faster language server should take a look.
