Plasma 6.8 development brings faster panel auto-hides, multilingual search, and more
KDE development moved fast this week with activity landing across Plasma 6.8, 6.7.5, 6.6.7, and Frameworks 6.30. The headline for Plasma 6.8 is a panel auto-hide speedup. Delays dropped from 500 ms to 50 ms. That's a 10x reduction in how long panels linger after your pointer leaves.
Seb Jo landed the change in plasma-workspace. Panels will snap back into hiding almost instantly in the upcoming release.
What's landing in Plasma 6.8
System Settings now supports multilingual search. Nate Graham implemented the feature. You'll be able to find settings pages by typing keywords in English or your current locale. Ramil Nurmanov added an autostart toggle. You can disable entries without deleting them entirely. Both changes target Plasma 6.8.
Xaver Hugl kept fixing kwin safety. The resolution selector blocks dangerously low values that could brick a session. You won't be able to pick a resolution that leaves you without recovery options. KWin GPU-reset notifications now cover all GPUs, not just the primary one. Screenshot performance also improved.
The lock screen gets selectable authentication methods. Harald Sitter worked across three components to give multiple auth types distinct UIs. The feature is experimental. Ramil Nurmanov also polished lock-screen button alignment for non-English languages.
Discover receives memory optimization. The background notifier uses less memory during update checks. The app also blocks re-rating reviews after the first submission to prevent server errors. kwin's adaptive brightness learns user preferences across lighting conditions. The audio volume widget sizes itself better when placed standalone on a panel.
Upcoming fixes across versions
Plasma 6.7.5 and 6.6.7 pick up bug fixes. 6.7.5 patches a crash in plasma-nm during network changes. The KDE daemon background process no longer crashes while reading or writing to system password storage. Window thumbnails return to the task manager correctly. Dragging the calendar widget between monitors no longer changes the displayed date.
6.6.7 fixes Discover's process termination. The app now kills all background tasks on quit. System Settings sidebar switching works as expected. The digital clock tooltip no longer overflows. Weather Widget alerts only show buttons for actions that actually do something.
Plasma 6.8 also includes screen reader accessibility for the activities sidebar. The clipboard no longer breaks multi-cell copy operations in LibreOffice Calc. Remote Desktop tray icons disappear when sessions sever unexpectedly. Audio volume widget icons fix two issues under unusual conditions.
Frameworks 6.30 resolves a percent-encoding bug in the desktop delete confirmation dialog. Special characters in filenames no longer show up as percent-encoded strings.
Performance targets
Plasma startup gets slightly faster as plasma-workspace does less unnecessary wallpaper loading. SVG caching improves VRAM usage and speed in ksvg. Screen recordings run smoother on high-refresh displays. The microphone tester now records at the system's sample rate instead of forcing 44.1 kHz.
Key contributors
Nate Graham handled six contributions across Plasma 6.8 and Frameworks 6.30. Xaver Hugl landed two kwin merge requests. Ramil Nurmanov contributed two changes across plasma-desktop and plasma-workspace. Méven Car optimized Discover memory and improved SVG caching. Harald Sitter handled the lock-screen authentication selection across three components.
Keep in mind that the panel auto-hide change is one of those tweaks that feels invisible until you get it. If you live with auto-hiding panels, the speedup should make the desktop feel noticeably snappier.
