KDE neon just released a fresh install image, neon-user-desk-20261016-0658.iso, and it's one of the first on the planet to ship Plasma 6.8. The build went live October 16, two days after KDE launched the "30th Anniversary Edition" desktop on its own birthday. You get the full feature set, including a dwell clicker, Union theming beta, and the retirement of X11 sessions after 42 years. Grab it from neon.kde.org, verify the signature, and remember it's a rolling daily build on an Ubuntu 24.04 LTS base.
KDE neon's fresh build already ships Plasma 6.8, the desktop's 30th-anniversary release
The 20261016 image is one of the first on the planet to deliver the milestone desktop out of the box.
KDE neon dropped a fresh install image, and it just so happens to be one of the earliest anyone can run Plasma 6.8 on. The build, neon-user-desk-20261016-0658.iso, went live on October 16. That's only two days after KDE released the desktop, a launch the association deliberately timed to land on its own 30th birthday.
The filename won't win any poetry contests, but it's honest. "user" is the stable edition, "desk" the desktop flavour, and 20261016 is simply the build date. The trailing 0658 is just the time, in UTC. So this isn't a grand milestone release. It's the daily build in a continuous stream. Fresh images are little time capsules anyway, snapshots of the whole KDE stack captured on the day they were compiled.
What's new in Plasma 6.8
Since this build went out two days after 6.8 dropped, you're getting the full set of features. There's a fair bit.
The accessibility additions probably matter most to the fewest trade-offs. There's now a built-in "dwell clicker" that fires a click once your pointer stops moving, which helps users with mobility issues without a third-party app. Digital Clock also gains the Bikram Sapat calendar and the on-screen keyboard gets Amharic.
Union theming moved from alpha to beta this round. It's meant to become the single source of truth for styling all KDE apps, and the beta can now cover Qt Widgets apps like Dolphin, Kate, and Konsole. It's not the default yet, but it's close.
The quieter change is arguably the bigger one. After 42 years, Plasma is retiring support for starting new X11 sessions. That completes its full move to Wayland. Legacy apps still run through XWayland, and KDE programs keep supporting X11 under other desktops. GNOME had already dropped X11 sessions by default back in 2025.
NVIDIA GPUs now get triple buffering out of the box, and remote desktop picked up exclusive mode plus two-way clipboard syncing. Spectacle can record system audio and the microphone now, and the screen-sharing portal lets you pick a custom resolution instead of being capped at 1080p.
There's even a rule that gives Steam's windows rounded corners and shadows so they feel less out of place. Yes, it ships a Steam-specific decoration rule.
Grab it and keep it honest
The download is available at neon.kde.org. For this exact build, look for neon-user-desk-20261016-0658.iso, which ships a .sig PGP signature and a torrent. Verify it against the KDE neon ISO Signing Key, 0x45F4C354638D1F29. The installer is Calamares.
The base is Ubuntu 24.04 LTS "Noble Numbat," on top of which neon layers its rolling repos. You get Qt 6.12, a Linux kernel around 7.2.x, and Firefox near 158.0. Recent Desktop User images run somewhere in the 3,100 to 3,200 MB range. If you're testing in VirtualBox, switch on 3D acceleration.
It's bleeding-edge, so the odd hiccup is on brand. One user on r/kdeneon reported a pop-up they hadn't seen on their other machines after a Discover update off this very build. That reads like an isolated quirk rather than a widespread defect. There's also the old PackageKit glitch where Discover claims updates exist when they don't. Restart the service and it usually clears up.
