KDE neon has released its August 27 build, delivering Plasma Desktop 6.7.4 on top of Ubuntu 24.04 LTS with a notably aggressive version jump. KDE Gear leaps straight to the 26.08.0 feature release after last week's bugfix cycle, while Firefox upgrades to 154.0.1 and KDE Frameworks lands at 6.29.0. The HWE kernel moved to 7.0.0-30-generic for newer hardware support, and KWin's DRM backend now handles GPU resets and inactive display outputs more reliably.
KDE neon ships August 27 build with KDE Gear feature release and Firefox 154 jump
KDE neon has published its 20260827-0521 User Edition ISO, and if you're tracking upstream changes, this one actually skips a few steps. KDE Gear lands at 26.08.0, jumping straight to a feature release after last week's bugfix build sat at 26.04.3. Firefox makes the same leap, moving from 153.x straight to 154.0.1.
Built on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, the ISO sits at 3.1 GB and comes with Plasma Desktop 6.7.4, the HWE kernel bumped to 7.0.0-30-generic, and KWin at build 107/54. It's a clean refresh, but the real story is what's running on top of the base. KDE Gear's 26.08.0 update touches 180 individual applications. Dolphin, Kate, Okular, Gwenview, Konsole, Ark, and KDE Connect all hit version 26.08.0 in the same breath.
What actually changed this cycle
Let's be straight about the version numbers. The previous build shipped KDE Gear 26.04.3, which was purely a bugfix release. This ISO swaps it for 26.08.0, a full feature release that took about a month to develop upstream. The monthly cadence for KDE Frameworks also rolled forward, landing at 6.29.0. That means the Qt6 underpinnings powering the desktop got a fresh round of improvements, including expanded iOS and Android platform support and a fresh batch of Oxygen icons for the anniversary.
Firefox isn't left behind. Mozilla's 154.0.1 ESR build pulls in security patches and performance tweaks from the upstream release cycle. The HWE kernel went from 7.0.0-28 to 7.0.0-30-generic, which usually means better GPU driver integration and firmware bumps for newer hardware. X.Org Server got a patch update to .6, and KWin's DRM backend finally stops removing GPUs without active outputs.
It's also the year KDE turns 30. The team leaned into the nostalgia, restoring the classic Oxygen theme and its Air and Horos wallpapers. The Oxygen window decorations and Breeze-style theming are now both available in Plasma 6.7.4, and the union theming system got a CSS-based tech preview for those who want to get under the hood. There's also a community wallpaper contest running through the rest of the anniversary year. Not bad for a project that started in 1996.
If you want to try it, the User Edition ISO is available at files.kde.org/neon/images/desktop/user/20260827-0521/. Torrent and zsync files are listed alongside a PGP signature and SHA256 checksum if you care about verification. The release is dedicated to Eric Laffoon, a longtime KDE supporter who passed away in May, and the build infrastructure continues its automated QA pipeline for both stable and testing editions.
It's a solid refresh for anyone running KDE neon on the weekly cadence. The jump from a bugfix to a feature release in the same build cycle is unusually aggressive, though it does mean you'll need a few GB of download space and a few minutes for Discover to index everything. Next update should land in late September when the next Gear cycle rolls in.
