The Fedora QA team has launched a week-long test day to verify internationalization support ahead of the Fedora 45 release. Running from September 7 through September 13, 2026, the effort is organized by Kamil Paral and asks testers worldwide to check font rendering, input methods, and locale handling across every supported desktop environment.

If you've ever wrestled with right-to-left text alignment or watched your CJK characters render as tofu on a Linux desktop, you know internationalization is where operating systems often go to die. It's unglamorous work, but it's also the difference between a distro that works for you and one that's essentially unusable. Fedora is trying to catch those regressions before they ship.

What's on the test list

The scope covers the full breadth of Fedora 45's desktop offerings. You'll be testing GNOME, KDE Plasma, XFCE, LXQt, Cinnamon, and any other graphical spins available at the time. But the checklist doesn't stop at the desktop shell.

You'll also need to verify the underlying i18n infrastructure: IBus input method servers, Pango text shaping, system-wide font fallbacks, and locale-aware formatting for dates, numbers, and sorting rules. The Fedora I18N project's stated vision is to make technology "accessible and attractive for users of every language," and this test day is the practical check against that goal.

Known issues are already being tracked. Bug 2508253, for instance, flags a case where Workstation Russian webui installs don't include the layout switch config in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/00-keyboard.conf. If you're testing Russian locales, that one's already on the radar. Keep an eye on the Fedora 45 Beta blocker list and Final blocker list to avoid filing duplicates.

How to jump in

You can run the tests on bare metal or inside KVM, VirtualBox, or QEMU. Just make sure you're on a fully updated Fedora 45 build. If you're doing a fresh install, grab the latest nightly image from openqa.fedoraproject.org/nightlies.

Results need to be submitted in a specific format so developers can triage them properly. You'll need to log:

  1. Which variant? (Workstation, Silverblue, Kinoite, etc.)
  2. Bare metal or VM?
  3. Which language used?
  4. Which architecture?
  5. Upgrade or fresh install?

Bug reports are where the real value comes in. Commenting on the results page isn't enough. Developers need reproducible steps, screenshots, journalctl -b output, and terminal logs. The organizers emphasize exploratory testing: go beyond the checklist and hunt for the edge cases that only surface when you actually use your system the way you use it at home.
