Bottles 52.0 released
Bottles version 52.0 has been released, providing an enhanced platform for running Windows software on Linux within separate environments. Utilizing Flatpak and the latest components of the Mesa graphics library, Bottles is particularly suited to Linux LTS distributions such as Debian GNU/Linux or Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
The new features in Bottles 52.0 bring about significant improvements in stability and user experience. Notably, general usability enhancements have been implemented alongside multiple fixes to resolve issues and bugs that plagued earlier versions. A notable example of these enhancements is the integration of the Onboard Dialog with AdwDialog from libadwaita, resulting in a more seamless and cohesive interface.
This release also adds or updates several specific features. For instance, this release allows Bottles to handle Windows Vista compatibility and provides users with the option to cancel bottle creation at any stage of the process. Furthermore, the Onboard Dialog has been modified to display detailed information on ongoing operations, allowing for greater transparency.
Another significant addition is the ability to cancel component downloads, enabling users to interrupt lengthy download processes if needed. Moreover, the Sandbox feature has been enabled, providing a more secure environment for running Windows applications.
Beneath the surface, several performance enhancements have also been implemented in Bottles 52.0. Specifically, data transfer operations are now optimized by transferring data in chunks instead of byte by byte, leading to improved copy performance.
This release addresses several critical issues related to reliability and maintenance. Notably, orphaned entries are no longer left behind in the library after uninstalling a program, and configuration loading issues have been resolved. Additionally, font smoothing has been enabled by default for a smoother user experience.
The donation button has also been made more prominent to encourage community support. Furthermore, the GNOME Platform has been updated to version 49, ensuring compatibility with the latest developments in this widely used platform.
A long-standing issue affecting Weblate translations has finally been resolved, and updates are now flowing freely once again.
