I screwed up again. . . While in SuSE I was opening up Counter Strike (steam) when it freezed. Being the complete newb that I am, I started mashing buttons. . . Anyways, I think I pressed CTR-ALT something and it took me to a command screen and prompted for login, I logged in and then restarted.

Defragementation with Linux???

Hello, im a linux newbie and i was just wandering why linux doesnt have a defrag util. does it even need to be defraged?? The reason I bring this up is because i have been trying to install all sort of things (mainly learning howto) and my MANDRAKE 10.

Now let me pull out some of my linux distro CDs. . . alright. I have freeBSD, mandrake 10. 0, mandrake 10. 1, Damn small linux (DSL), mandrake move, peanut linux, and. . . gentoo. Now, I have succesfully installed only 2 linux ditros in my whole life.

Help! mandrake newbie!

I've just installed mandrake 10. 1. . . when i started up the computer, i chose linux in the bootloader, it didn't load into linux, but kept rebooting. . . does anyone have the same situation before? my processor chipset is VIA C3 512mb memory.

today i installed woody. . . then immediately after finished. . . i briefly entered KDE then into init 1 and did an upgrade to sid with apt-get. Problem : I was asked what manager did i want. . . and there was no KDE there.

Untitled thread

NT4 server install is being replaced with a suse 9. 1 install. NIC, Soundblaster (ISA 16 bit PNP), ATI video etc all worked fine in NT so I don't *think* there are any resource conflicts. System is pretty vanilla and has a linksys LNEPCI2 card.

how do i recompile the kernel in fedora core 2 inorder to get the ntfs support??? in red hat 9. 0 i just used this commands: make mrproper make xconfig make dep make bzImage make module make module_install make install when i tried xconfig in fc2 the gui was somewhat corrupted not displaying the correct characters! ...

After i tried to upgrade Woody with the Sid apps i rendered my sistem unusable. So i tried installing Sarge with the network CD - install which worked just fine with woody. But here i stumbled upon 2 problems 1.

Fedora Core 2 Tips

I am new to Linux but am looking to learn a few things. First of all, I just finished my install of Fedore Core 2 last week and loaded all of the updates. I ran into a problem with the kernal update because the machine would still boot into the old kernal unless I manually change it on every start up.

Kernels? Upgrades?

I am running Mandrake 10. 0 Official with the 2. 6. 3 kernel, is there any need to upgrade to a newer kernel or to 10. 1? And what are the risks? For example if you upgrade the Xfree, I found I had to reinstall the Nvidia drivers.

I Have Debian 3. 0r2 I wanted to install Lilo on a Floppy. . . . . . but i didn't find any option to do this. So i made a boot disk. . . . . . but that contains the kernel. . . and it takes some time for the OS to start.

Triple booting with XP/Server 2003/RHEL3

I would like to know if there is a way to boot WinXP/Server 2003/RedHat Enterprise Linux on a system that has 3 hd's in it. One drive has XP, one has Win Server 2003, the other I would like to install RHEL3 on it.

Mandrake 10 installation problem

I've just tried to install mandrake 10 as a dual boot with XP pro. When I insert CD1 the Mandrake install page comes up. I click to install and the screen just goes dead, with nothing happening. I know that there's nothing wrong with the discs because they have been used successfully before.
