I've been seeing a lot of posts in which new users are trying to install the latest and greatest Distros on their 'vintage' PC. Typically a 166-300 pentium or pentium II, with 128-256MB of Ram and a 1-2GB HD, and some 'unknown' video card.

Heres my story. I want to install Linux Mandrake 9. 2 onto my computer, currently running XP Home. The hard drive is 37. 7 GB, and 80% is free. When I start the installation off of the first CD, i get to the part that you partition your hard drive.

Newbie need help installing

I dont know if this is common sensse or if its my fault, but here it goes im going to do a dual boot with both xp and mandrake 9. 1 now i got the distro from one of the links on the board ended up to be a 680 mb file.

Having serious RPM problems with Fedora.

All of a sudden RPM is not working correctly. This of course, is also causing big problems with apt-get and yum. Neither will work correctly since both are RPM based. This problem never occured in Red Hat 8 or 9.

Packages on CD2 never installed in Mandrake 9.2

I've done the 9. 2 install several times now with the same result: when searching for available packages, the install never stopped to show me the choices of packages. I was never prompted to insert CD2.

Sluggish Mandrake 9.2

I'm just making the final switch from M$ to Linux. Had Mandrake 9. 0 in a dual boot with Windows, just toyed with it for a while and it worked fine, then replaced it with Mandrake 9. 2. Newer version runs MUCH slower than 9.

how to mount a folder

hi i dont know how to mount a folder from windows to linux so that my linux OS sees the folder i also cannot get connected to the net cos my internal Modem BCM V. 92 doesnt support Linux 9 or the drivers havent come out yet does anyone have the drivers that i dont know of do reply thanks.

Thats an ss of my system monitor, the drive that i have clicked i think is the swap drive. . . what do i have wrong, that its always using that much memory and no swap, or is that just me? I ask becuase to play tuxracer my comp lags insane amounts(with the graphics or something, but i have an nvidia 2 card which cl ...

Just as i thought i was getting a little bit better at linux. . . everything starts going wrong lol. . . . so right nwo, i restarted my comp. . . and it seemed fine, well except it was taking a while to boot.

Anyone have a copy of a current one? ayo. freshrpms. net is my source list (well off their site is where my yum is up since i used synpatic and it uses hteir site atm) and i want to get back to the normal update list that comes with yum preinstalled on fedora.

I'm trying to get alsa to work perfectly with my turtle beach santa cruz dsp sound card. . right now i can get sound, but if i introduce another device to input sound(like a dvd and mp3 at same time) it breaks up and lags greatly, is this just linux or i havn't configed it right? I've tried to read the sites readme ...

Linux Mandrake 9.2 First Time Install & I can't get in!!

I setup WindowsXP to dual boot with Mandrake 9. 2 with Mandrake being first on the drive. It seemed to load great then I get a login screen which I enter my sn i used during install and a pw as well which i also type in.

Connectiva Linux 10 Beta 1???

Hi I installed Connectiva Linux 10 Beta 1. It really is shaping up to be a great distibution - with all of the latest bleeding edge applications you can think of. The only problem is that I can't work out how to load modules I need at boot time.

I wounded my system with fdisk...

I decided to try and increase the size of one of my partitions, and deleted a couple that I don't use that were next to it in preparation to expanding it somehow. hdb6 was full, and hdb7 and hdb8 were empty, so I killed the latter two with fdisk.

Hi, i'm a newbie. I have installed linux Mandrake 9. 2 Downaload Version on my Acer Aspire 1203X (i have also WinXPpro). My problem is: When i start linux, he start all, but after he have start the eth0, he start the PCMCIA but he make nothing, for 30, 40, 50 minutes.

hey. . ive been trying to get sound on RH9. . but its not working. . ive ran the autodetect thinggy. . and every time i try and play the test sound it dosnt play anything. . . im using onbord sound on the asus A7V8X-X mobo.

i installed mandrake 9. 2 on my 3rd harddrive ( after some changes. . . ) and it is configured and every thing is fine but it will not take my password such as if i was to put in the login then i hit enter for the password line my keyboard does not work the enter and control+alt+del but it wont work, did i do somet ...
