What I need to access a Wireless Network?

This is a discussion about What I need to access a Wireless Network? in the Linux Networking category; I got the last release of Mepis in my laptop (Presario 3000). I connect to the network of my college by a 802. 11b wireless lan. I want to know what things I need to do to connect to the wireless network connection with linux.

Your laptop should have a "PC" slot. There are several cards out there that will work, but, for my money, you can't beat the Proxism Orinoco Gold card. If there is 802.11b in the classroom, the Gold card will have no problem picking it up, provided Mepis has the Prism 2 modules in place to support it.

Look for it in that list and see if it's supported. What kind is it?

Then you should be in business. This from the Mepis handbook...

Found minor bug in MCC Network that could affect start at boot.
Added more explanations in MCC Network messages.
Added wlan0 config for Prism2 WiFi users.
