Has anyone been having problems with unexplained serial ATA crashes. I have recently aquired two serial ATA drives and every so often the system seems to freeze. This appears to be linked to heavy serial ATA usage, usually during transfer from my old (reliable) 3ware parallel ATA Raid-5 array, typically after between tens of megabytes and tens of gigabytes of transfer. I've noticed that the kernel (2.4.21) reports DMA disabled on these new hard drives. When I re-enabled this manually, a crash occurred almost immediately. I also tried a fresh installation on these drives, with the same problem.

Does anyone know of any related problems, or any solutions?

FYI, I'm running Mandrake 9.1 on an Abit NF7-S (v2.0) with both Maxtor (120 GByte) and Western Digitial (36 GByte) drives. I know WD drives have given problems before, but the problem seems to also relate to the Maxtor.

Cheers,

-Karl
