I have a "Pctel HSP56 Micromodem"(internel) which is running fine on COM3 of my Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2. I installed SuSE Linux 9.1 (Personel Edition) with KDE desktop environment lately as a dual boot with XP. I'm a complete newbie and hadn't seen a linux desktop before. I configured most of the things but modem. The modem was detected by SuSE and i configured it with the help of Yast but when i tried to dial-in with the help of K-Internet i received the following error log:

SuSE Meta pppd (smpppd-ifcfg), Version 1.50 on linux.
Status is: disconnected
trying to connect to smpppd
connect to smpppd
Status is: disconnected
Status is: connecting
pppd[0]: Plugin passwordfd.so loaded.
pppd[0]: --> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.54.0
pppd[0]: --> Initializing modem.
pppd[0]: --> Sending: ATZ
pppd[0]: --> Sending: ATQ0
pppd[0]: --> Re-Sending: ATZ
pppd[0]: --> Modem not responding.
pppd[0]: Connect script failed
Status is: disconnected
pppd[0] died: Connect script failed (exit code 8)

I used all the ports possible and all possible options available, but all in vain. I consulte some linux geeks who suggested to get a new modem. So did i. I got a Conexant modem which is currently auto-configured by Win-XP as "SoftV92 Data Fax Modem" on COM4 and is working fine. But SuSE does not detect it. I re-installed SuSE but didn't help at all.......

I want to get into the world of "Open Source" but if i'm unable to connect to the internet.....

Please Help!!
Can updated drivers help??
If so where can i get the latest updates for those modems. And how do i install them??
If i'll have to upgrade my hardware, what kind of hardware should i look for??
What is KPPP and is it available in SuSE Personel Edition 9.1??
How can i configure WVDial??
Does Ubuntu Linux Support my Modems??
Can Fedura Core help??
I just want to switch to Open Source because of its security and performance!! Please help!!
And thanks in advance!!

there's more than one "flavor" of Conexant modem, and they don't all have drivers
available in Linux.

can you provide more information about the modem which was auto-detected?
there's a chance you need only a bit of configuration help..

if that first modem which was auto-detected can't be made to work,
there are alternatives.

There's an inexpensive modem (click me) which does have drivers available in Linux.

But first, it's probably worth the effort and experience gained to try to resolve
the trouble with the auto-detected modem.
