Have you installed a distro? Which one? If you haven't, I would download the ISO and burn Knoppix, and see if it will detect it. Knoppix has good hardware detection.

I ran into a similar problem when trying to install RedHat 9.0 on the exact same Vaio model. I downloaded Fedora Core 2, and it installed perfectly.
