MEPIS
This is a discussion about MEPIS in the Everything Linux category; I'm brand new to Linux so I'll start with a little background. I started with an ADAM,went to COMMODORE64 then AMIGA and finally to ibm clones. Everyone in my neighborhood think I'm the local guru (boy,are they confused? My wife says I'm more like the local nut.

My two newest computers came preloaded with "Spyware XP",
the ultimate bandwidth eater.
I spent a couple weeks searching the web for an alternative
OS.I was impressed with the information I found on Linux
systems so I downloaded and burned a LiveCD with which I
was very impressed.
So I pulled the plug on the HD in my hp pavilion 551w and
stuck in an old 10gb hd and started looking for ISOs.
I downloaded and burned DEBIAN,couldn't figure out the
installion docs.So I downloaded and burned ARK,couldn't get
the GUI to work with SIS.I burned SUSI,couldn't get it to
boot.
Finally found MEPIS and have an OS.Now I need help.
1. hp officejet R60 3in 1 (parrellel).Can't get MEPIS to recognize
it. OR
2. hp psc 2210 4 in 1 (USB). Locks up OS.
3. How do I set up an Intel
pro/100 VE network connection
so I can get on the internet with cable ?
I am fully aware that you can't definitly solve my problems
without being in the presence of my machine so I will greatly
appreciate any advice from anyone.Even the newest novice may
say something that will ring a bell.

I am not going to be much help on this one, but perhaps others can comment.
HP and Compaq systems have a hidden partition that contains recovery information, and in some cases, bios information. It is good that you changed the hard drive, as I know that recovery disks are not usually shipped with XP systems with HP systems. This would have been a hassle.
This issue is important if there was bios information written to the original disc, then the bios is affected.
Can you get into the bios and change information, such as making the system boot off of CDROM first?
I will assume yes, if you have been able to boot from a cd.
MEPIS is a very good CD based distro and works in all my systems.
The second issue is your hardware. The multi-function printers are a pain, especially USB. This will be the second major issue for you. If you have one, I would just try a plain printer to see if it works.
Internet should work out of the box, if the hardware is supported. The only clarification would be if you are trying to use a USB modem directly connected to the USB port on your computer. Again, it sounds like you have a network adapter (NIC card), so the NIC card should be plugged into a router, which in turn is connected to the USB modem.
Linux works with many common NIC cards, but intel may be an issue, I don't know. This may be solved by getting another NIC card that is supported. They are very cheap and may be worth the effort.

Mel, I've heard a lot of good things about Mepis and have been meaning to download it and have a look. Maybe this is a good excuse for me to.
Those problems may be more specific to Mepis itself, in how their method is on setting such things up. I'll try to download Mepis sometime today though, and have a look at it..

I think most of my problems are due to my ignorance of
Linux.I'm reminded of my old Adam & Commodore days.
I switched printers to a hp deskjet 722c.After setting
up everything I could find having to do with printers,everything
looks great except it doesn't print.I even get the popup
message "file has been successfully sent to yourhpdeskjet722c".
Although Mepis is telling me the message has been sent to the
printer,I think he keeps forgetting to tell the printer.
I have made a little headway though.I can turn on the printer
without crashing.
My biggest problem is my ignorance of Linux.For that reason
I have decided to stick with Mepis and post my problems and
and anything I do that seems to help.Hopefully that, with replies
from the Linux community will make this thread helpfull to
future newbees interested in Mepis.

Years ago (not saying how many), when my oldest daughter
came home upset because someone said a question she asked
her teacher was stupid,I made 2 posters and had her give them
to her teacher.
You read one in my last post, the other said;

Mel. I have Mepis installed on my system with a HP laserjet. Is yours USB or parallel port?

Try this.
Sign on as root user. The password is mepis
Go to the k menu > settings > control panel
Click on the + sign next to peripherals
Choose printers
Your printer should be listed on the top.
On the bootom of the menu, where it says Printer system currently used, choose cups.
On the top of the menu, choose add > add pinter/class > next.
Click the button local printer > next
Your printer should be listed under parallel port 1, click on this. > next
on the let screen scroll down to hp. on the right choose your printer model
Highlight the recommended driver > next
A menu will come up with a "test" button. Click on this.
wait for the test page to print, if it does successfully > next > next until you reach General information.
pick a new name for the printer. For me it was laserjet2 (no spaces). ignore the other fields.
Click on finish. Your new printer name should be there. Right click on it and set it as user default, exit the control panel
Try to print a document using the printer name you just created.
When you print your first document, make sure that cups is the default choice on the printer menu that comes up in the application that you use and that you use your new printer name.

I got my cable connection going in Mepis.
While reading messages on this site I ran across a remark about
plug and play. Checked my BIOS. Was set for P&P OS . Changed it and
discovered Mepis is not a P & P OS.
I'm up and running on web now with Linux. No protection ,though.
A diskwipe and reload will give me a little moe exp. with Linux.

I think I have a broken module on my Mepis
install disk.I can't get a printer to work
with Mepis.
I wiped Mepis and installed ARK and everything
is working.Only problem is sound doesn't have much
volumn.I should be able to fix that with powered
speakers.(Mepis has good sound but no print)
