Laptop upgrade

This is a discussion about Laptop upgrade in the Linux Hardware category; Ok, I've just about decided to upgrade my Compaq Pisario 1500 laptop to Linux. It's an ideal candidate for this. P4 2. 4, 512MB, 30GB HD, 15Lcd. Deserves better than XP. I booted it on the Mepis live CD to check hardware compatibility and most everything works.

I booted it on the Mepis live CD to check hardware compatibility and most everything works. Video, sound, DVD, USB, modem, nic. even the pointing device and 'basic' keyboard. Problem is that I'd like to see all the special buttons enabled. If nothing else the volume control & the shutdown. Anybody know of a specific keyboard driver that will do this... or, can I edit something, or, am I SOL ;( ...

Any feedback is appreciated .
