just use kppp or wvdial, you will need to edit the user settings for your number within each one. I have had the same trouble and found that kppp is your best bet at a sane life.
I think the redhat-config-network is a very good wizard. You can setting the internet includeing ADSL, model, WideBand etc easily.

What type modem do you have? Who is the manufacturer of it?
