I have been trying to set up an FTP server on Mandrake 9.1 using proftpd. I have installed it properly from the installation CD. But when I type in (in shell):
>service proftpd start
this error message appears:
"Unable to determine IP address for this machine"
Why does this happen? My IP address is set fine, I checked using:
>ifconfig
What do I have to do to make proftpd work?

I'm sorry, I don't have an answer for you, but wanted to let you know I had similar problems with proftp once before. I either never found an answer, or tried several "remedies" that didn't work. I finally uninstalled it and went with the other ftp server/client software on the Mandrake 9 cds, but I can't remember what it's called right now. I believe Mdk gives you 2 or three choices. Try uninstalling proftp server/client and using one of the others. That's how I got ftp working for me.
