Here is a web site with a few ways to do it: http://www.aplawrence.com/Linux/lostlinuxpassword.html
I did by boot a live Linux CD ( http://www.knoppix.org/ ) then I made the hard drive writeable the edited the mnt/hda2/ect/shadow (your path my be a little different)file by removing all the characters between the colons on the root line. Then save the file and reboot without the CD, login as root and just press enter as the password. Hope this helps.
