I have no idea, but I didn't want you to feel ignored...
Actually, I do know that all the places speaking of having proper 3D acceleration enabled talk about nvidia stuff. So, while you might get really good 2D performance with it, I'm not so sure about 3D.
This link seems to have some good info on ATI Linux drivers, so it might be worth checking out:

OP
Thanks Clutch, just wanted to add another post to linux compatible really bringing the total to 3 Seems a lil dead
Ive since had a look on a few sites and im not even sure i could get decent 2D at the moment on the 9700
Might just have to leave it until they bring some drivers out.

ATI's good for drivers.
Have a look on the website, under linux drivers.
I'm getting an 9700, I wouldn't if there wasn't a linux driver.

ATI has official drivers for Linux, for the 8500 and so on...they support 3D but I didn't test them. Even before they were "released" you could use the ATI FireGL 8x00 drivers which had 3D support (XFree 4.2.x has only 2D support for the Radeon 8500).
