this command always report a 'host lookup failure'

Code:
ifconfig ath0 net 192.168.0.1 netmask 255.255.255.0

'ifconfig ath0 address 192.168.0.1' errors the same . .

and

Code:
dhclient ath0

always reports that it doesn't know any component ath0.

Has anyone got any ideas to help me get further please. I think this can only work if the router to gives me the address via dhcp. I feel like im nearly there now . .
