Scientific Linux 5.10 released

Posted by Philipp Esselbach on: 11/12/2013 10:54 AM [ Print | 0 comment(s) ]

Scientific Linux 5.10 (RHEL based) has been finally released

SL is a Linux release put together by Fermilab, CERN, and various other labs and universities around the world. Its primary purpose is to reduce duplicated effort of the labs, and to have a common install base for the various experimenters.

The base SL distribution is basically Enterprise Linux, recompiled from source.

Our main goal for the base distribution is to have everything compatible with Enterprise, with only a few minor additions or changes. Examples of items that were added are Alpine, and OpenAFS.

Our secondary goal is to allow easy customization for a site, without disturbing the Scientific Linux base. The various labs are able to add their own modifications to their own site areas. By the magic of scripts, and the anaconda installer, each site is to be able to create their own distributions with minimal effort. Or, if a user wishes, they can simply install the base SL release.

As a reminder, the SL5x repo always points to the most recent release.
The SL5x repo has been updated to point to SL 5.10 at this time.

Users of the Scientific Linux 5x repo should run
yum clean expire-cache
This should allow yum to notice the updated metadata within the 5x repo.

Mirror sites are encouraged to synchronize their mirrors at this time.

MySQL:
Scientific Linux 5.10 provides updated versions, specifically versions
5.1 and 5.5, of the MySQL packages as software collections.

In order to migrate from MySQL 5.0 to 5.5, you must first update to
MySQL 5.1. Note that the MySQL 5.1 packages are not supported and are
provided only for the purposes of migration to MySQL 5.5. You should not
use MySQL 5.1 on any of your production systems.

For more information on the migration from MySQL 5.0 to MySQL 5.5, refer
to chapter Migrating from MySQL 5.0 to MySQL 5.5 provided by Upstream
at:
https://access.redhat.com/site/documentation/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/5/html/Deployment_Guide/ch-Migrating_from_MySQL_5.0_to_MySQL_5.5.html

As a result of this update, we will not issue any more security
advisories for the MySQL 5.0 packages (mysql-5.0.* and related
packages). Security advisories will be provided only for MySQL 5.5.
