GNOME 2.31.6 released

Posted by Philipp Esselbach on: 08/05/2010 06:22 PM [ Print | 0 comment(s) ]

The GNOME 2.31.6 Development Release is now available

Ahah! This release is one day late, and I can already hear some people saying we're not good at respecting our schedule! I must admit that straight after GUADEC is not the best timing for a GNOME release ;-) I guess the late tarballs due mail was already an indication of that, but adding the facts that we wanted to make sure GTK+ 3 is not needed for this release (thanks to all who added a --with-gtk=2.0|3.0 configure flag!), and that a few modules were reluctant to build (hey, modules should have vacation too!) can explain this extremely huge delay of a few hours. To make this release GTK+ 3-free, we had to take the 2.30 versions of a few modules; this is only a temporary solution and everything will go back to normal for 2.31.90.

GNOME 2.31 is looking great, though, and it means we'll have a good GNOME 2.32! Really, try this release and you'll enjoy it. But the best thing is that a lot of people are continuing working towards GNOME 3, and this is the real exciting part! Go go go!

You all know what you have to do now. Go download it. Go compile it. Go test it. And go hack on it, document it, translate it, fix it.

To compile GNOME 2.31.6, you can the jhbuild [1] modulesets [2] (which use the exact tarball versions from the official release):

The release notes that describe the changes between 2.31.5 and 2.31.6 are available. Go read them to learn all the goodness of this release:

WARNING! WARNING! WARNING!
--------------------------

This release is a snapshot of development code. Although it is buildable and usable, it is primarily intended for testing and hacking purposes. GNOME uses odd minor version numbers to indicate development status.

For more informations about 2.31, the full schedule and the official module lists, please see our colorful 2.31 page on the wiki: http://www.gnome.org/start/unstable/

For a quick overview of the GNOME schedule, please see: http://live.gnome.org/Schedule

We hope you'll love it,

The GNOME Release Team
