Zed 0.216.0 released
Just released today, Zed editor has a new update; version 0.216.0 is out! It brings plenty underneath the hood, focusing on practical improvements alongside bug fixes.
One noticeable change involves AI safety right within the editor. The developers refined how deleting threads works in the history view; it no longer accidentally triggers thread activation. And seeing what's happening with Threads? That’s clearer now too, especially when you look at the agent panel; they also made the loading state more visible to help navigate.
Speaking of the agent panel, there are some solid usability upgrades there as well. You can now delete entire thread histories directly from it, and tool call descriptions for read file tools have been updated. This update provides a clearer explanation of the outlining behavior that you may encounter when working with files through the agent. They also touched up the grep description to ensure things line up properly when using include_pattern.
The Advanced Completion Panel (ACP) got some attention too. Now you can use @mentions right after typing slash commands, making collaboration feel a bit more direct and less clunky than before.
Git features are another area seeing progress scars on the Zed editor itself, but version 0.216.0 marks significant advancements in our Git integration work ('Let's Git Together'). Already this year, the developers wrapped up support for tackling 107 of the original 182 issues identified back then, and that's while also shipping 47 PRs from community members along the way! The goal remains strong: finish all those outstanding tasks by December 31, 2025. Meanwhile, they are seeing contributions pour in from users at every level; it’s nice to see such a broad base getting involved.
On the editor front itself (not counting Git), some additions caught my eye. For instance, you can now toggle word diff highlighting within expanded hunks and control this via language settings if you fancy! And there's a genuinely useful new view: right-click context menus on files in the editor pane, project panel, or even the Git panel now open up the file history view. This shows commit details for that specific file, including author and timestamp.
Making branch management cleaner? The developers also included a dedicated user interface (UI) for deleting Git branches, a simple yet often appreciated addition when things are less obscure. Underneath these visible changes, performance is also getting better in several ways. Multibuffer operations involving many files run smoother thanks to background thread handling for git blame processes. Big project-wide searches and diffs feel snappier across the board.
