PHP 8.3.29RC1, 8.4.16RC1, and 8.5.1RC1 Fedora/RHEL Packages released
PHP developer Remi Collet has just released three new Release Candidate versions for testing: PHP 8.3.29RC1, 8.4.16RC1, and the highly anticipated 8.5.1RC.
These packages are now open for testing on Fedora and RHEL-based systems (including CentOS, Alma Linux, and Rocky). If you're ready to dive into evaluating their performance or catching any bugs early, these RCs give you a great opportunity to see them in action before they become the official releases.
For those looking to test alongside their current setup without disrupting things, Remi provides some helpful options. You can leverage Software Collections for installing new packages side-by-side with your existing ones, or grab base packages directly from specific repositories designed for this purpose.
Specifically, if you're on Fedora 41-43 or using Enterprise Linux version 8 or above, the RPMs (package managers) for PHP 8.5.1RC are available through the remi-modular-test repository. The same goes for all three RC versions, where each is accessible via base packages in the remi-modular-test repo on Fedora 41-43 and Enterprise Linux ≥8.
The key difference lies in how you access them, which might depend on your system setup or preference:
For PHP 8.5.1RC1: RPMs are offered as base packages through remi-modular-test (Fedora 41-43 & EL≥8) or available via the remi-test repository's Software Collections.
PHP 8.4.16RC1 follows a similar pattern, where you can get RPMs from base packages in remi-modular-test (on Fedora/EL) or install them as Software Collections within remi-test.
And for PHP 8.3.29RC1, users of those supported distributions will find the RPMs available both through base packages in remi-modular-test and via Software Collections in remi-test.
Essentially, all three RC versions are now ready for you to test on your system if you're interested. This means you can help evaluate their stability or explore any new features they might bring, which is a chance to peek at what's coming next without the pressure of upgrading stable systems quite yet.
