NVIDIA Linux x64 (AMD64/EM64T) Display Driver 590.48.01 released

NVIDIA just released a new Linux x64 display driver, version 590.48.01. It’s notable because it builds significantly on the recent R590 beta (that was 590.44.01).

One thing addressed in this update tackles bugs related to how EGL platforms work, especially when you're trying to set up multisampling. Before now, some systems using egl-wayland2 just couldn't get things right; it messed with the wallpaper and wasn't reliable for those specific display configurations.

There's a fix that uses GLX as a sort of workaround when checking properties related to multisample visuals. That might sound technical, but essentially it means smoother interaction in certain graphical scenarios. The team also bumped up the minimum required Wayland version support to 1.20.

Beyond the EGL stuff, they've fixed problems affecting power management from the nvidia-settings panel on Wayland systems. And compatibility-wise, things are better for glibc versions 2.27 and newer, too. They've also improved matters with X.Org. XServer versions starting at 1.17 (with the video driver ABI version being at least 19).

Performance-wise, Vulkan swapchains have gotten a tune-up; NVIDIA says it helps reduce that annoying window resizing stutter you sometimes see.

They also dealt with an issue specific to certain monitors, like the Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 about DPI reporting not being correct. And if you're using virtual GPUs via Venus VirtIO and run into problems with Vulkan apps, there are fixes for those too.

Finally, they patched a bug potentially causing system freezes when running PREEMPT_RT kernels, which could lead to crashes in specific environments, another step towards more stable operation overall.
