LMDE 7 (Gigi) Beta is now available for download, offering a variant of Linux Mint that utilizes the Debian GNU/Linux 13 (Trixie) package base instead of Ubuntu.
Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE), version 7 "Gigi" Beta, is now available for download on the mirror sites, which marks an important turning point in the development process of this variant. As an alternative to traditional Linux Mint releases, which are based on Ubuntu, LMDE leverages the power and stability of Debian GNU/Linux 13, code-named "Trixie," as its foundation.
By eschewing the use of Ubuntu and opting for the Debian package base instead, LMDE seeks to offer users a version of Linux Mint that is remarkably similar in terms of functionality and usability. However, this approach also enables LMDE to benefit from the latest package updates and improvements without being constrained by the typical release cycles associated with traditional Ubuntu-based distributions.
The developers behind LMDE aimed to bring together several key features for this new release, including a Debian 13 package base and various enhancements that were recently incorporated into Linux Mint 22.2. A notable addition is support for OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) installations, which was first implemented during the development cycle of Linux Mint 22.2.
The integration of Linux Mint 22.2 features has also been successfully ported to LMDE 7 Beta, ensuring that users can enjoy a familiar and intuitive experience while still benefiting from the advantages offered by the Debian foundation.
