LibreOffice 25.8.4 released
The latest version of LibreOffice, a free office suite developed by volunteers for personal productivity in office environments on Windows, macOS, and Linux, has been made available for download.
It's built right after the end-of-life for 25.2 and is timed close to their own upcoming 26.2 release announcement (expected early next month). Basically, it's ready for you to use in your day-to-day work right now.
This new version brings heaps of fixes, more than 70 actually. These updates really focus on smoothing things out, boosting performance and reliability, and getting LibreOffice to play nicer with other software, like Microsoft applications.
It helps to know that the underlying tech is pretty solid too. The LibreOffice platform powers a whole range of stuff for both TDF itself and outside companies (the so-called 'ecosystem'). Crucially, it supports two major document formats: ODF (the open standard) with its own file types like .ODT and .ODS, plus the Microsoft proprietary OOXML format including things like .DOCX, .XLSX, and .PPTX.
And this tech versatility isn't limited to just docs. You can use it for building applications across basically all platforms, Windows, macOS, Linux, Chrome OS on desktop; Android, iOS on mobile; and even cloud stuff. For businesses needing more enterprise-level features like formal support agreements or faster security updates, some partners offer special builds (like LibreOffice in business), but these are based on the core LibreOffice platform.
Need help getting started or stuck on something? The forums and mailing lists are still your go-to places for support from fellow users. Volunteers handle it there.
And finally, one thing we should mention: The Document Foundation suggests installing the Microsoft Aptos font to make collaborating between LibreOffice and Microsoft 365 smoother than usual. They've got a specific page you can visit to grab it.
