Inkscape 1.4.3 released
Inkscape 1.4.3 has been released with a significant number of bug fixes and improvements. The core news here is nearly 100 bug fixes, plus various small tweaks that collectively improve things. One common pain point addressed was crashes or freezes when opening certain files or trying to export particular objects; those should be smoother now.
Digging deeper into the changes: PDF handling just got better. Importing PDFs means more accurate font substitution and less clutter in clipping paths. There's also a new feature that lets you pick which page of a multi-page PDF you want, triggered by the preview image within the import window. For those working with paths directly, the Simplify Live Path Effect has gotten an upgrade too, now there's a checkbox to control how subpaths get handled.
The user interface itself saw some refinement work across macOS and other platforms. Glitches in the UI text display on macOS are fixed, and you'll notice smoother animations when popups appear, though if that animation is causing trouble for your system, you can dial them back for better performance now. Theme flexibility also got a boost, making it easier to customize without diving into the theme's source code.
Extension lovers will find news too. Improvements cover multi-line text entry fields within extensions, getting those dialogs looking right; alignment fixes ensure they properly fit on screen; and clearer error messages guide you when extra programs are needed for an extension task. A big plus is that effect extensions can now be written using XSLT, a potentially powerful option for developers. For users hitting the Windows version? You'll find the binaries updated with necessary libraries, helping things build smoothly.
Platform-specific fixes rolled out across the board. macOS benefits from UI text being properly displayed and less window flickering when resizing. Multi-monitor setups should feel more stable too. On Linux, we're back to reliable drag-and-drop functionality after it bit the dust in some cases. Windows users get JPEG/JPG export brought back, a simple but crucial fix.
For developers keeping up with Inkscape's inner workings, build pipelines for macOS have been updated on GitLab, and dependency refreshes for Windows aim to ensure stable builds across all platforms. And there's this nice-to-know: that annoying warning during the build process is gone as well.
