Heroic Games Launcher 2.19.1 Brings Fixes for Linux Launching Issues and More
A new update has been released for the Heroic Games Launcher. This follows some recent issues reported by users attempting to launch games on certain Linux distributions, which were related to library conflicts between Legendary and GOGDL components. The latest release aims to resolve these specific problems.
For Linux users still facing difficulties despite this update, the strongly recommended course of action is to report issues directly via the Heroic Games Launcher GitHub or Discord channels.
Heroic has also reinforced its stance on distribution method; using Flathub remains the preferred approach for installing and running it on Linux. This ensures greater control by avoiding direct dependence on system libraries during installation and execution.
This release follows version 2.19.0, which introduced experimental Zoom integration for games that support it (currently limited to Linux). macOS users benefit from DXMT chip support now too, requiring specific Wine-Staging setup as noted in the release notes, which makes a separate download necessary because the existing method needs updating periodically.
Further adjustments have been made: key options have been streamlined across both Linux and macOS platforms by removing irrelevant ones. Gamepad navigation itself saw general improvements beyond just the interface, though specifics are more about underlying usability than flashy new features. For Windows users, security measures now apply equally to the setup executable and the portable version due to certificate signing.
Notable technical updates include Electron upgrading to 39 along with bug fixes within GOGDL and Legendary themselves addressing game listing discrepancies, update issues, and other problems. This addresses ongoing platform-specific bugs in those libraries that previously affected Linux gaming experiences through Heroic's core components (Zoom integration aside).
Elsewhere, the developers have implemented initial auto-update support for games launched via AppImage on Linux, which is another step towards smoother operation depending on your setup. macOS users will also find the UI now includes accessibility options like Irish language translations and a toggle to disable all animations if needed.
