GIMP 3.0.6 released
The latest stable release of GIMP, version 3.0.6, is now available for download. This micro-release addresses numerous bugs and regressions that had been identified since the previous versions. Many of these bug fixes have been backported from the upcoming 3.2 release candidate, so users can benefit from them now.
One notable improvement in this release is the enhanced usability of sliders. As part of the transition to GTK3, the default cursors were updated, but this change caused some users to experience the "Hand" cursor when hovering over number slider widgets. To resolve this issue, developers Denis Rangelov and Michal Vašut worked together with the GIMP team to devise an alternative solution.
In addition to this improvement, workarounds have been implemented for Windows language-specific crashes that occurred when opening or exporting files. These issues were found to be caused by a combination of bugs in LLVM's libc++ and Windows UCRT code. While a permanent fix is still being developed, a temporary patch has been added to the Exiv2 build to mitigate the problem.
Other notable bug fixes include:
- A crash issue that occurred when trying to change the color of text outlines via the Text tool.
- Improved transparency handling with filters and transforms, particularly for JPEG images that do not support transparency.
- Restoration of a feature from GIMP 3.1.2 that allows users to apply theme colors to brush, font, and palette dockables.
- Updates to non-destructive filter code, which improves the stability of filters and aligns the development and stable codebases.
Furthermore, this release includes several improvements for macOS users:
- Fixing a crash issue when dragging a color to fill the canvas.
- Resolving issues with multiple icons appearing in the macOS dock.
- Correcting problems with windows "flashing" back and forth in multi-window mode.
Security enhancements have also been made, including improved security for image imports by developers such as Jacob Boerema and Alx Sa. Additionally, a bug that prevented Python-based plug-ins from connecting to the internet on Windows and macOS has been fixed.
The build process has also undergone improvements, with all relevant commits from the 3.1 development branch being backported. This includes fixes for bugs related to AppImage users, such as crashing at the file dialog when there is a .json file, as well as updating the Flatpak manifest to use the latest GNOME 49 runtime.
Finally, several assorted fixes have been made, including:
- Fixing critical warnings that could occur when adding virtual devices to GIMP.
- Correcting code typos and other issues that affected layer boundaries and extension files.
- Improving security for plug-ins, such as allowing the legacy Jigsaw filter to draw on transparent layers.
The GEGL and Babl color management engines have also been updated, with new versions containing a number of updates and fixes. These improvements are aimed at making GIMP's image processing capabilities more efficient and robust.
