Fractal 14.beta drops into the Flathub Beta channel with fixes for editing quirks and a streamlined authentication flow. The team finally disabled file sending during message replies since that feature simply never worked correctly anyway. Visual updates include darker map markers and call room icons to help users distinguish between different types of conversations. While this beta simplifies identity provider support, users should expect minor regressions before the official release candidate arrives.

Fractal 14.beta release fixes editing quirks and simplifies login flows

The Fractal 14.beta release is out for those running the Matrix client on Linux who want to see what comes next before the stable version arrives. This update tackles some specific bugs that have been bugging users for a while now, particularly around file transfers during message edits. It also changes how identity providers work behind the scenes to make the login experience feel more native without requiring older SSO configurations.

The development team realized that trying to send files or share locations while editing a message was pointless since it never worked correctly anyway. This update now properly disables those options when you are in the middle of replying so users do not waste time attempting actions that get blocked by the backend logic. It is better to remove the option than let someone click a button and watch nothing happen for ten seconds while it tries to fail silently.

Call rooms and map marker visibility updates

Call rooms now display a camera icon in the sidebar to make them instantly recognizable compared to regular chat channels. A warning banner appears at the top of these rooms because the team knows other users on older clients might not see messages sent there properly. Map markers also received a tweak where they use a darker variant of the accent color so the dots stand out better against the map background underneath. These small visual adjustments help reduce confusion when navigating between different types of conversations in busy workspaces.

Authentication simplification for the beta build

Support for signing in via SSO identity providers has been dropped to simplify the codebase and align closer with modern OAuth 2.0 standards. This change should make the authentication experience feel more native but requires users to update their configuration if they rely on older login methods. Since this is a beta release there might be a slight risk of regressions even though the team expects it to remain mostly stable until the next release candidate stage.

Community contributions and how to help

The project has seen several new contributors opening merge requests lately to fix their own pet peeves with the application. Joining them by fixing one of the newcomers issues is a good way to help if anyone has time on their hands during development cycles. This release also includes improvements to technical docs thanks in part to all the upstream projects and external helpers who review the text.

Installers can grab the beta via Flathub but should keep an eye on bug reports before treating it as a daily driver just yet. Stay tuned for the next update once the team feels confident enough to push toward a release candidate build.

Fractal 14.beta released

Things have been fairly quiet since the JasonAI takeover. Sending files & location is properly disabled while editing/replying, as it doesn’t work anyway. Call rooms are identified with a camera icon in the sidebar and show a banner to warn that other users might not read messages in these rooms. While we still support signing in via SSO, we have dropped support for identity providers, to simplify our code and a have a closer experience to signing in with OAuth 2.0.
