Ubuntu Linux 25.04 (Plucky Puffin) has been released and it represents a recent release that incorporates the latest open-source technologies into a user-friendly and high-quality Linux distribution. GNOME 48 has been introduced, featuring triple buffering for enhanced performance, HDR settings, and new functionalities such as a Wellbeing Panel and Preserve Battery Health mode.

The installer now provides an enhanced experience for installation alongside other operating systems, featuring improved BitLocker support and advanced partitioning options. Ubuntu 25.04 is based on the Linux 6.14 kernel and features a new scheduling system with sched_ext, improved Wine/Proton gaming support through the new NTSYNC driver, and enhanced container tooling with decoupled bpftools and linux-perf. The initiative further extends confidential computing capabilities to on-premise environments through the support of AMD SEV-SNP hosts and unveils a new ARM64 Desktop ISO tailored for next-generation hardware. Improvements in networking and identity management include secure time syncing using NTS, better integration with Active Directory, cloud authentication options with EntraID and Google identity, and DNS-aware wait-online logic added through Netplan. Maintenance updates will be available for a duration of 9 months for all versions launching with 25.04.

The final freeze for Plucky Puffin has been reached, and the release of Ubuntu 25.04 is scheduled for next week. Current uploads will undergo a review process and will be accepted or rejected in accordance with established pre-freeze standards. Uploads must be organized into categories for releasing critical bugs and bug fixes appropriate for post-release SRUs. The Ubuntu Release team has the authority to determine which uploads adhere to the SRU process. Unseeded packages are open for use; however, it is essential to validate any changes prior to release. The Ubuntu Release Team will deactivate cronjobs and generate RC images to facilitate a smooth release next week.
