Icrontic has posted a review on Red Hat Linux 8.0:

"Well, I managed to finally fight my way through the downloading frenzy of Red Hat Linux 8.0 and snag myself a copy. Red Hat Linux 8.0 was released Monday, 30th September 2002, and since then, every Red Hat mirror has been bombarded with people try to get themselves a copy. The Red Hat mirror, hosted by kernel.org (mirrors.kernel.org) has temporarily shut down their Red Hat mirror, because their site was so heavily affected.

There are two versions of Red Hat Linux 8.0, Red Hat Linux 8.0 Personal, and Red Hat Linux 8.0 Professional. The differences between the two can be accessed here, at Red Hats Product Comparison page."

OSNews has posted another review on Red Hat Linux 8.0

"Well, here on OSNews, there has been plenty of discussion about Red Hat 8, what it is, what it isn't, the Bluecurve look and many other features and issues. I ordered Red Hat 8 Personal Edition and decided to see how close Red Hat 8 may be to a distribution that Joe and Jane User could install and use."

RatedPC has posted a review on Mandrake Linux 9.0

"Of course, one day after Mandrake 9.0 was released, I had it downloaded and burned on 3 shiny CDs. However, this time, I decided to load it on new hardware. In fact, I've been waiting for Mandrake just so that I can upgrade my whole system. I was quite happy with Mandrake's performance on my Asus motherboard based Duron 750Mhz with 512MB RAM, 6GB hard drive. While KDE and Gnome were just too slow, I used IceWM for a speedy desktop. To find out how I use my desktop, refer to my Linux on Desktop article. The new computer consists of Asus A7V266E (Via KT266A), Athlon XP 1600 (1.4Ghz), 256MB DDR RAM and 40GB Maxtor D740-X 7200RPM hard drive. I am still using an HP 9300 10X4X32X CD burner which has been faithful to me for the past 3 years. The Geforce 2 GTS and Creative Sound Blaster 5.1 are also carried over from my previous box. I am also using Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer and I have a standard keyboard from my Acer box from 1997."

Linux Orbit has posted a review on Mandrake Linux 9.0

"As a long time Red Hat user I have of course been awaiting 8.0, but since Mandrake 9.0 was released a little sooner, I decided to give it a try, while I was waiting on Red Hat 8.

I had high hopes, but my hopes were quickly dashed.

The first problem I had was that my USB keyboard would not work - at all - during the install. That was disappointing but I was able to hobble through the install using only the mouse. Finally I finished the install and rebooted. LILO tried to boot Linux, and hung. I didn't have a boot disk because the Mandrake installer told me that I would not be able to make one since I chose the XFS file system and the driver will not fit on a disk."

ASE Labs has put up a Lycoris Desktop/LX review

"Okay, when I saw this login, I couldn't help to think XP. The background is a major copy almost. Anyway, looks pretty nice so far right? Just select your name and enter your password to get started. You can also type in 'root' for the name and enter the root password to log on as root. Don't do this unless you absolutely know what your doing, root access means no protection from human error (yes, I'm talking about you)."

Saw over DistroWatch that LinuxHelp has published a review on Mandrake Linux 9.0

"The Mandrake Control Center is nicely built and allows you to configure your whole system with a few clicks of the mouse.

Over all, Mandrake 9.0 is a step in the right direction for Linux use on desktop machines. The interface is well polished and pretty much everything works out of the box."

OSNews has posted a review on Red Hat Linux 8.0

"Gentoo, Lindows and Lycoris arguably were the big surprises of the year in the Linux land, but everyone is waiting the release of Red Hat 8.0 with, possibly, the biggest anticipation ever for a Linux distribution. Since Red Hat posted the Limbo and Null betas, fans of the most popular distribution on earth were making waves and even called this new version a Windows killer. Does this really hold up though? Will Red Hat be successful on their quest to infiltrate the business workstation/destkop market? Read more to find out and view some of the high resolution screenshots we have for you!"

OSNews has posted a review on UnitedLinux Beta

"First of all, why is SCO in braces, you'll ask. The reason is, I have not seen anything in this linux distribution that sounds or smells like Caldera/SCO, even though I downloaded it through SCO's UnitedLinux beta tester website. I will mostly focus on the installation (as I am a UNIX installation developer in "real life"), but I will also discuss more parts of the UnitedLinux distribution."

LinuxPlanet has posted a review on UnitedLinux

"For some reason, UnitedLinux attracts FUD the way a dog does fleas. But, now that the public beta is out, we can see that, well, its basically a GPL-compliant, high-end Linux server operating system.

In short, it's what the UnitedLinux companies--Conectiva (http://www.conectiva.com), SCO (formerly Caldera, http://www.sco.com), SuSE (http://www.suse.de/en), and Turbolinux (http://www.turbolinux.com) promised it would be: A Linux thats optimized for server work. "

LinuxPlanet has posted a preview on Red Hat Linux 8.0

"Red Hat 8.0 is scheduled to be formally released on Sept. 30 and many in the Linux user community are watching the development of the new "Bluecurve" desktop design very closely.

In the retail edition of Red Hat that's coming out this Monday, the Linux vendor is replacing the traditional GNOME interface with Bluecurve, a Red Hat-created GUI theme combining elements of both GNOME and KDE, the major rival to GNOME"

Saw over DistroWatch that OSNews has posted a review on LindowsOS 2.0:

"The Linux community has been buzzing about LindowsOS since its original announcement over a year ago. With Michael Robertson, founder of mp3.com, at the helm, it was heralded as a Linux that could seamlessly run all of your Windows applications. As details became available, the skepticism of the community grew and with the LindowsOS general release only months away, no one is quite sure what to make of Lindows.com and there product, LindowsOS. We tested Lindows 2.0 and we today present the most in-depth review ever written for this much-talked OS, accompanied by a number of shots."

OS News has posted a review on Lycoris Desktop/LX

"The (very easy) installation procedure hasn't change much since the last reviewed version in March 2002, so you still get to... play Solitaire while the OS is being installed. This time the Lycoris icons (and not the older Redmond Linux ones) are in place in the installer and the OS itself."

UnixReview has posted a review on TransGaming WineX 2.1:

"This isn't to say that there aren't tons of games available under Linux, albeit most are non-commercial. The hot new games the Warcrafts and Diablos of the world that use DirectX have been problematic. However, TransGaming Technologies Inc. of Ottawa, Ontario has created a solution called WineX. Its portability product makes it possible for popular Windows games to run under Linux, but they aren't just doing it for the gamers. TransGaming is working with game developers to speed cross-platform deployment of hot new titles by providing the magic necessary to run under Linux without spending the months or years required to create such a game."

Linux Orbit has posted a review on TransGaming WineX 2.1:

"Once you subscribe to the TransGaming WineX service, you can download the binaries for your Linux distribution. Currently, Debian (.deb), Red Hat (.rpm) and Slackware (.tgz) binaries are available. I use Red Hat 7.3 with Ximian GNOME and I installed the WineX RPM without any difficulties. I tried the WineX package on two different systems running Red Hat 7.2 and 7.3."

Saw over DistroWatch that Modemnet has posted a review on Lycoris Desktop/LX:

"In just the few days I have used it and explored it's features, I have become attached to using a version of Linux that needs little configuration and works immediately after installing. This may be an avenue for me to research for future customers. Offering them an alternative to Windows if they request it without having such a huge learning curve that is required with other major distributions. I am definitely excited at the opportunities that Lycoris is going to present desktop users in the coming future."

MandrakeForum has posted a review on a WalMart Microtel PC pre-loaded with Mandrake Linux

"It has been widely reported that WalMart.com offers a line of reasonably-priced Microtel PCs that are pre-loaded with Mandrake Linux 8.2. The systems range from a 900 MHz Duron up to a 2.0 GHz Pentium 4. Being on a strict budget, I ordered the "low-end" 900 MHz Duron (which is still better than any PC I currently have).

The order was placed at WalMart.com on July 22nd, and the package was delivered on July 31st. The price was $391 plus $14.35 shipping plus $30.30 tax (grumble... California) for a grand total of $435.65."

LinuxGaming has posted a review on WarCraft III under Linux

"They say happyness comes in small doses, I tend to agree with that. Anyone who has played games, on any platform, will recognize the name Blizzard. They have brought us some of the most stable and enjoyable games in the business. Taking a strole down memory lane we can recall such classics as the original WarCraft, WarCraft 2, Diablo, Diablo 2, andStarcraft. Each title has proven that Blizzard can produce games that are a notch above most other game companies. "

ExtremeTech has posted an article about Lindows:

"The very name of the product implies that it is somehow a blend of Windows and Linux. This raises the expectations for Windows users that it will "magically" run all of their Windows applications. What will happen when they pop their favorite Windows application CD into their computer and it won't install? What will happen when they try to run their favorite 3D game and it won't run? "

OSNews has posted a review on the next Red Hat Linux generation:

"Just a few weeks after the beta release of the next version of their Linux based OS, Red Hat has released 7.3.93 of their software, once again, code-named Limbo. Those of you who read my first Limbo review know that I gave it a favorable review. After downloading and installing the second beta, I had to take a few days before writing this article. "
