Infoworld reports that software maker Trustix this week formally unveiled a deal with IBM to jointly market and sell its secure Linux software in the U.S. on hardware from Big Blue.

"Trustix has developed a version of the Linux operating system it characterizes as a "hardened Red Hat Linux with the look and feel of Microsoft Windows," according to Wollan. In addition to an operating system, it sells a firewall server, proxy server, LAN server, Web server, and e-mail server. Each of those is based on freely available software such as Apache, Postfix, and Samba."

CNET News reports that Linux will be the main operating system for IBM's upcoming family of "Blue Gene" supercomputers

"The decision to adopt Linux came, in part, as a result of the growing size and strength of the open-source community. Thousands of developers around the world are participating in the evolution of Linux. Creating a new OS inside of IBM would require a massive engineering effort."

CNET News reports that DaimlerChrysler has purchased 108 dual-processor Linux workstations from IBM to run car-crash simulations.

"DaimlerChrysler has been using computers to simulate crashes since the early 1990s, first with single supercomputers, then with clusters of systems running Unix. Now the company is switching to less-expensive systems with Intel processors running Red Hat's version of the Linux operating system, DaimlerChrysler said."

Yahoo! News has posted a news story on Linux:

"The Linux (news - web sites) operating system remains strong in the server market, continuing to prove itself in a growing array of computing environments, including financial services, education and government. When it comes to the desktop, though, Linux can claim less than 1 percent market share, according to 2001 figures. Research firm IDC found the operating system is installed on just .5 percent of desktop PCs, while Mac OS has 2.4 percent desktop market share and Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT - news) Windows has 95 percent."

ZDNet has posted a news story on KDE 3.1

"KDE 3.1 is due at the beginning of November, and the visual difference from its predecessor--version 3.0--will be immediately obvious, the group hopes. The software will ship with an icon set called Crystal and a new theme called Keramik, both of which have hints of Apple's Aqua interface in Mac OS X and Microsoft's Windows XP styling. It will use a new theme manager and windows will have drop-shadows to give the desktop a three-dimensional look."

In this contest C&A is very proud to announce its OpenEvidence participation, integrating its Time Stamping technology, to this
'evidence creation and validation system'
of electronic documents and activities.

The technology developed by the project can be used as basic building blocks to support such services as non-repudiation of electronic business transactions, property right protection and notarisation.
Implementations and demonstration services using the protocols defined in RFC 3029 (DVCS) and RFC 3161 (TSP) will be provided as initial activity.

InfoWorld reports that a small software development company this week disclosed that it will soon offer prebuilt versions of Microsoft Corp.'s Passport Internet-based authentication technology for the Unix and Linux operating systems.

"The news follows an announcement Thursday from Microsoft that it would share some of the source code for its single sign-on service. The Redmond, Washington, software maker said that it would make available in November the code to the Passport Manager -- software that links a Web site or a software application to Microsoft's Passport service, which allows users to log on to multiple Web-applications using a single password."

The SuSE Linux project hopes that they've put one more piece in place to challenge Microsoft with their new alternative to the giant company's Exchange Server:

"In a move to challenge Microsoft Corp.'s Exchange, SuSE Linux will later this week announce that its new Openexchange Server will be available in mid-November.

The Openexchange Server will combine the SuSE Linux Enterprise Server operating system, an e-mail server and groupware functionalities in what a SuSE spokesman says is n "innovative all-in-one communication and groupware solution for companies of all sizes at an unmatched price/performance ratio.""
