AlmaLinux 10 released

AlmaLinux 10 has been released, codenamed "Purple Lion," and is intended to support the community by ensuring compatibility with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 10. The platform has implemented minor enhancements to its user base, activating frame pointers by default for real-time tracing and profiling. It additionally facilitates prolonged x86-64-v2 support, enabling users with legacy hardware to benefit from security updates for an additional ten years.

EPEL packages are being developed to assist users in their transition to the x86-64-v2 release of AlmaLinux OS 10. Support for Secure Boot on ARM platforms has been implemented, and SPICE support has been completely restored for both server and client applications. AlmaLinux OS 10 features a technical preview of KVM virtualization support for the IBM Power architecture, a capability that has not been available upstream since version 9.0.

The AlmaLinux OS Foundation has officially announced the general availability of AlmaLinux OS 9.6, codenamed "Sage Margay". Installation ISOs are provided for all four architectures: Intel/AMD (x86_64), ARM64 (aarch64), IBM PowerPC (ppc64le), and IBM Z (s390x). AlmaLinux provides a range of cloud, container, and live images. The release encompasses updates to module streams, compiler versions, elfutils, Valgrind, SystemTap, and PCP, alongside enhancements in networking, security updates, improvements in containerization and virtualization, as well as the inclusion of snpguest and snphost packages. A technical preview of KVM virtualization support for the IBM Power architecture is also included.

AlmaLinux OS Available via WSL CLI

AlmaLinux OS is now available through the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) CLI tool, streamlining the process by removing the necessity for extra configuration or the Microsoft Store interface.

This update enables the installation of AlmaLinux on Windows Server environments where the Store is inaccessible. The compatible versions are AlmaLinux-8, AlmaLinux-9, and AlmaLinux-Kitten-10. To install AlmaLinux on WSL, one can utilize PowerShell, Windows Terminal, or CMD. To create AlmaLinux WSL images, users should install bash, git, buildah, and jq, and execute scripts located in the rootfs/ directory. Community members are encouraged to assist in testing the images within the ~SIG/Cloud channel, and your feedback is greatly appreciated. We invite the community to actively participate in the testing process within a Windows environment.
