New to Linux

I'm getting very sick of Windows. It's bulky, allways has an error and is jut plain annoying. I'm looking for a Linux distro that I can pick up quickly. I don't want to have to learn new controlls and rules just to open notepad.

Toshiba portege 3480CT and mandrake 10.1 vid probs

I've installed cd 1 and cd 2 of Mandrake 10. 1 on to my 3480CT. Is their a video driver for linux available, for mandrake 10. 1, on my toshiba portege 3480CT laptop. Because even by me changing it in the task bar.

mandrake 10.1 install error

New formatted 40G HD,256M sdram. Keep getting this error. . . The error is when i boot the cd with the help of floppy (the cd cannot be booted automatically even thought it is referred to the readme that it can be installed without floppy).

Type size on screen in Mandrakelinux Control Center

I am trying to add some software to my 10. 1 community installation and would like some information as to how to increase the size of the fonts. The type size can't be any bigger than 3 point the way it is currently displayed and I am too old to read 3 point type.

OK. . I know all Linux people are going to say Linux only. . . but I want a Win98/WinXP Home/SuSE 9. 1 Pro test box. . . which I have discussed at length with Dapper Dan (thank you enormously). My question is I want to use System Commander 9 from VCOM.

Hello, I have been a long time user of Redhat Linux (since 4. 2). I am going to be building a new box and I am considering Mandrake 10 instead of the Fedora path as an upgrade to my Redhat 9 server.

If I install Linux and find I like it better than windows(Im sure I will because Windows blows), should I just delete the windows partition? Or would I have to delete all the partitions, reformat, and then install Linux to the whole hard drive.

Another Dual Boot question...

Hi I just installed Mandrake 10. 1 I have XP installed on my hard drive and I let Mandrake installation protion off 10GB. It looked like everything went well it installed bootloader but after it was finished only XP loads up.

Can't boot XP dual booting with RH9 (LILO)

Hello Well I got a problem dual booting Windows XP Pro and RH9. I'm using LILO. Everything is all right with Linux but when I'm trying to boot with XP it says in a blue screen: The session manager inicialization system process terminanted unexpectedly Thanks in Advance.

installing suse 8.2 problems

im having problems installing suse 8. 2 everytime i try to install it it will give me the option to boot from the hard disk or install so when i go to install the screen goes black and thats it ive ran the memory tests and everything is fine my system specs are: celeron 2.

I am looking into making a tri-boot computer that will be my hobby computer (as if they aren't all hobby computers already). I want to use Win98 (for older games), WinXP (so my wife still has a usable computer) and a distribution of Linux.

I installed SUSE linux 9. 1 personal on my computer but thats not the problem. The problem is the display is at an insanley low resolution and color depth, and nothing comes out when I type on the keyboard.

Often I see rpm files available for download, but usually, they're listed as being for Redhat or Fedora. My question: Will these work on any rpm-based system, or are they tied to a specific distro? I'm using SuSE 9.

i have debian sid i recently installed the 2. 6. 8 kernel but since then in cannot get the mouse running. i have a Ps/2 mouse that worked fine with the older 2. 4. 20 kernel I took the XFree86config-4 file from Knoppix 3.

unable to boot from fedora 3 dvd

Hello, I tried booting from a fedora 3 dvd but unsuccessful. I have already set the boot options to boot from dvd-rom. I got the dvd-image from redhat and burn it using nero. Is there any special setup require to boot from dvd-cd ? regards raphael.

just curious has anyone encounter any problems with having xp and linux on the same machine. for some reason, my fedora core 2 loads up but then just holds on a blank screen. i tired it out twice and the same result.
