DVD DMA with hdparm

Palos
Cannot enable it, hence my DVD playback is choppy (audio/video stalls every 2-3 sec). When i run hdparm -d1 /dev/dvd as root, I get: HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Operation not permitted Running RH8 with default kernel.

Free Software from MS

If you go here: you can sign up for surveys, and some of which give you various software packages to choose from. I just finished up one (almost an hour and a half!) and it gave me various client OSs, Applications, X-Box game combos, and some other stuff.

Wow! Netscape doesn't suck anymore

Brian Frank
That might've sounded a bit sarcastic, but so far, it's pretty good. I got Netscape 7. 0 downloaded to try out for the heck of it, as I've been having trouble on another message board-and it turned out to be IE6 for some reason.

Work computers...

Spectre630
Sometimes I wonder what people do at work. Everyone who posts their work computer in their sigs seems to have a P3 or P4 and here I am stuck with a PII233 at work. :-p.

Can't get USB SanDisk reader to work in RedHat 8

clutch
For some reason, all mount /dev/flash does is simply stall out the command prompt, and I just get ignored when using the disk management util in KDE or right clicking on the desktop and selecting to mount the flash drive.

multi booting

pbuckne
You've got questions, we've got answers, or the commercial goes. I have a (wait for it) Dell PII 266 with 256 Meg of RAM and (count 'em) 2 WD Caviar 2. 1 Gig harddrives. I have been playing with booting multiple operating systems off of it, and have succeeded in getting no more than two off the ground at a time.

Browsing MP3s

clutch
Is there a way to have KDE (or GNOME, or anything else for that matter) list MP3 metadata in the file browser so that it can be sorted by album, artist, etc? I am used to this ability in Windows, and I sorely miss it in Linux.

USB boot question

clutch
I managed to get Debian installed on a workstation at home, but my USB mouse doesn't work unless I run modprobe hid and then modprobe mousedev then it works fine. So, how do I get it to do this auto-magically at boot time by itself? I am running Woody 2.

A few problems in redhat 8.0

onlyhuman23
I have just installed redhat 8. 0 and I am having a few problems. 1) In the control center in configuring kernel tab, I made a change as my processor type was selected as pentium 3/celleron, as it is pentium4 so I changed it and at applying was prompted by a message saying you just have to run make symlinks dep.
