Does not need MS-Windows. There is a native client (very big download).
One problem:
After registration (license key entry dialog) the game refuses to start. Edit nwncdkey.ini and insert a newline before [CDKEY]. The section marker must be in one single line.
Something is wrong there, I submitted a bug report, but Bioware does not react somehow.
