Google has announced Android Studio 1.0, an Integrated Development Environment (IDE), its version of Microsoft Visual Studio, aimed at helping developers design better Android apps

Built on the IntelliJ IDEA (Community Edition) Java IDE, this is the first full release since the idea was previewed at Google I/O last year.

Android Studio will now be released in stable, beta, dev and canary (nightlies) depending on how bleeding edge (i.e. shonky) you want your development environment. This is the same four categories currently available for users of the Google Chrome browser.
