USN-45-1: nasm vulnerability

Posted by Philipp Esselbach on: 12/22/2004 04:15 PM [ Print | 0 comment(s) ]

A nasm security update has been released for Ubuntu Linux

==========================================================
Ubuntu Security Notice USN-45-1 December 22, 2004
nasm vulnerability
CAN-2004-1287
==========================================================

A security issue affects the following Ubuntu releases:

Ubuntu 4.10 (Warty Warthog)

The following packages are affected:

nasm

The problem can be corrected by upgrading the affected package to version 0.98.38-1ubuntu0.1. In general, a standard system upgrade is sufficient to effect the necessary changes.

Details follow:

Jonathan Rockway discovered a locally exploitable buffer overflow in the error() function of nasm. If an attacker tricked a user into assembling a malicious source file, they could exploit this to execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the user that runs nasm.
