tcpdump DoS (SSA:2005-195-10)

Posted by Philipp Esselbach on: 07/15/2005 05:19 AM [ Print | 0 comment(s) ]

New tcpdump packages are available for Slackware 8.1, 9.0, 9.1, 10.0, 10.1, and -current to fix a security issue. A specially crafted BGP packet can cause tcpdump to go into an infinite loop, creating a denial of service where network monitoring is disabled.

More details about this issue may be found in the Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) database:

http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CAN-2005-1267

Here are the details from the Slackware 10.1 ChangeLog:
+--------------------------+
patches/packages/tcpdump-3.9.3-i486-1.tgz: Upgraded to libpcap-0.9.3 and
tcpdump-3.9.3. This fixes an issue where an invalid BGP packet can
cause tcpdump to go into an infinate loop, effectively disabling network
monitoring.
