Linux Compatible Compatibility Lists goes LGPL

Posted by Philipp Esselbach on: 08/22/2005 11:31 AM [ Print | 0 comment(s) ]

Maybe you already noticed that the compatibility list backend engine has been finally updated. What you see is the first phase of a transformation to a free (as in freedom) user submitted compatibility database. All new submissions are automatically licensed under the terms of the GNU Lesser General Public License.

Why the switch to a free license?
This is a user submitted compatibility list after all. I think it is only the next logical step to allow the free distribution of the information and knowledge contributed by the members of this community.

Can I include this list in my projects?
Yes, all submissions under the LGPL can be included in both free and commercial projects as long you follow the terms of this license.

Do I need to copy paste the entries from the pages?
No, a downloadable version of all LGPL’d submissions will be made available in the next phase of this project. I expect this happens in a few days.

What about the other postings?
I originally planned to release the entire database under a free license. Unfortunately, many of the older submission have been submitted anonymously or without email address, so there is no way to ask the users in question for permission about changing the license of their submissions.

In case you already submitted to the database, please consider to resubmit everything again. Sorry for the inconvenience.

I need to register to participate on the compatibility list?
Yes. There are two reasons for this change:

1) Spam and nonsense posts have been increased over the last couple of month.
2) To prevent something like in the previous point (What about the other postings?).

Which operating systems are currently supported?
Linux Compatible: Fedora Core, Red Hat Linux/RHEL, Debian GNU/Linux, Ubuntu Linux, Mandriva Linux, SUSE Linux, KNOPPIX, Gentoo Linux, Slackware Linux, CentOS, MEPIS Linux, Xandros Desktop OS, Damn Small Linux, PCLinuxOS, Libranet GNU/Linux, Linspire, Progeny Componentized Linux, KANOTIX, Puppy Linux, Yoper, Turbolinux, Yellow Dog Linux, VLOS, Ark Linux, ClarkConnect, Trustix, CRUX, Vector Linux, Aurox Linux, and SLAX.

All other GNU/Linux distributions and older posts are listed under “Linux other”. Additional GNU/Linux distributions may be included in a not so far future.

NT Compatible: Windows NT 3.51, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows XP 64 bit (x86_64), Windows Server 2003 64 bit (x86_64), Windows Vista, and Windows Vista 64 bit (x86_64)
